Gramercy has good internet. Should be possible to get monthly rental there but it's going to cost you. Grinding on 4g is probably doable also, but I've only done it as a backup.

1mbps, the lowest package from an internet provider, is totally fine for poker, never once had a lag issue from it

stability is the issue when it comes to poker, not speed

I think it is related to Gramercy being a "Fibr Village". I stayed in three different units and looked at quite a few others there and they all had unshared PLDT Fibr max speed/unlimited bandwidth packages.

Good to know. Gramercy it is then. Anybody know of any other "fibr villages"besides Grammercy?

Question for Dante but others can chime in too:
-Looking for decent beach town/city/island in Phil.
-$1000 a month living costs.
-Close to decent beach, I mean walking distance.
-Decent internet to grind poker.
-Need decent nightlife
-Hooker scene not necessary but would be cool
-Easy on the eyes ****able local chicks

Thx.

Well there was some recommendations about Bohol earlier on this thread... And if hookers Subic(though there is prolly some in Bohol also), though the beach there is not so nice

if you just want some sand and water subic would work, otherwise you will be let down

main beaches are boracay, palawan, bohol

grindable internet can be hard in the beach towns, bohol is the only one ive had fully confirmed that has good internet, but the apartment was a bit expensive so 1k living costs might be a bit hard (in a touristy area also soe verything a bit overpriced, but 1200ish doable)

lots of local girls from cebu go to bohol on weekends, and there would be p4p

not sure about getting a condo on boracay, my guess is that would be pricey

palawan is supposedly the nicest scenery, gaston used to live there and i know he wasnt paying much, but internet might be a question

I have played couple of those free to enter for 'fun'... Metro offers also daily tourneys... which i think are better... Both also have some 'special' events which are pretty decent.

Allow me to qualify myself. I've never lived in Pinas. My longest stay was 1 month in Subic - Olongapo City in the 80's (fun times).

However, I am also in a long distance - long term (yes we're getting married) relationship with a Filipina in Cebu (not the city). I'm planning my retirement in the Philippines, just a few years away.

If you go outside of the major cities, into the provinces, you can most certainly live on $1k per month. One doesn't have to be that far away from the city either. You want hookers? Is 45 mins to an hour away too far? You want decent locals? You can go for a decent sized city that's still 45 mins from the heart of a major city.

Take Cebu for example. About 1 hour south of Cebu City is Naga. Population 100k. On the waterfront, plenty of women. And while I can't say 100%, likely good internet for grinding.

It's all about location.

I'm going to retire in Argao. About 2 hrs south of Cebu City. We have a small home, on a decent size lot and are looking to buy the empty lot next to us for some expansion. It's 15 mins from argao main center, and we have a piggery that produces a nice little income. Well above expenses. With our expansion plans (not large by any means) it will produce 70,000 php (about $1500) per month with not too much effort and a couple people to work it. With property and home paid for, this income, along with a very modest social security income (a few years away still), will provide for a nice living. No need for extravagance.

I do have to say.. "piggery farm plan.. that actually fails" is like the most common thing in the expat "starting a business" community Perhaps after the "my own great resort/restaurant.. which no one visits".

But if you already got it working for you now, I guess you know the troubles (sell price can be different every month, feed price can go up, pigs get sick, etc.) Nothing personal, best of luck

I believe I also own some pigs, very likely a losing game for me (do get like half = ~4k from it after a sell), but it's mostly to help out some people.

Which forum were the piggery horror stories posted? I have a friend who has bad business sense moving back to the province to start a piggery, maybe I can talk her out of it.

Business basics. What can you do that other people can't.

Running a small pigfarn better than.
a) large industrial farmers
b) people with political connections for subsidies etc
c) people who have been doing it for years
d) people who do it themselves instead of hiring people.

Assuming you can do this, not only enough to make a profit but enough to keep yourself in a decent lifestyle implies that a bunch of stuff we know to be true about economics and the universe, isn't.

I guess you could argue that agriculture here is capital starved, which may be true to some degree. But one thing the Philippines isn't short of is small nesteggs looking for a quick buck.

That all said. Best of luck

Our piggery is already 4 yrs old and profitable. We're making some changes that will making it far more profitable. Most "back yard" piggery's go about it incorrectly. We're beyond that already. We've found the way to go about it with a good honest return. Thanks for the luck wishes.

PM me if she's set on it, if you want to offer her some guidance. But if she has a bad sense of business, it likely won't help.

Sounds good Yeh, afaik its mostly about the profit margin that can become very small when you don't really know what you are doing and/or have unexpected issues.

For example I "like" this article: http://lifebeyondthesea.com/ask-henr...e-philippines/ Also note the reply after that article: "Update: The day after posting this article.. the cow died. Stopped eating, wouldn’t drink water and then just gave it up after a day despite a visit from the Vet. That’s at least a 12,000 Peso loss right there. Such is life on the farm." :X

Obviously it might be the mistake of the writer of that article for not having the proper/trusted caretakers etc. But still I know from good friends that even w/ trusted caretakers (and also proper initial investment etc).. things just look so much better on paper (pigs eat more than expected, taking more months before you can sell it, getting lower price for them, getting sick, etc.) and they would pretty much barely make profit.

Again, this is just in general, seems bigfishead got it working fine.
