Yeah. I was going through a food stall market in Singapore thinking how all the food stalls looked so tasty and colorful and fresh compared to what I was used to... then saw the one brown gloopy looking place.... yep. Filipino Food stall

On the fresh vegetables front, does anyone know why you can't get good ones? Especially say tomatoes?

Balot is one of the better dishes in Filipino cuisine. At least it's not pathogenic like most of the food served in Filipino restaurants. This country is a culinary wasteland.

Chicken tinola is pretty much the only dish I really like. Already posted itt about how the amounts of sugar used in so many of the dishes here is disgusting.

You can find good Filipino food in the Philippines. IT's NOT EASY but it can be done. There is usually a good local shop somewhat close by. TIP - the cleanliness and modern look has been an almost infallible sign for me when it comes to these places. If they care about the front they likely care about the food. (local places at least) It's digging thru the muck to get to that one gem that makes it tough to eat there in PH...

lovedaphils, thanks for the info but from what I've seen just seems like more trouble than it's worth! I've eaten at Apu, which is the higher end Filipino place in COD, it wasn't that good.

Rugby: I went to S&R today, had much higher quality than the supermarkets in Robinson and MOA but still not great. I heard the S&R at the fort is better, so could be better there.

For those curious about the poker scene in Manila...

Pokerstars room in City of Dreams

I only went here once on a weekday. They have shuffling machines, and had only 2 tables going all day. One 25/50 and another 50/100. Rake is 10% but dont remember the cap or anything else.

Resorts World

First thing to note is that this is the only place in Manila with a 5% rake, and 50 pesos for badbeat jackpot. Non alcoholic beverages are free, food options at the table suck, but there are some other decent options elsewhere in the building. Dealers are inexperienced and terribad. They deal stupidly slow and muck a winner every 2 hours probably. No shuffle machines. A mix of tourists and regs come in, if u carefully table select u can def find some deep stacked fish. Honestly i will sometimes change tables if theres a crappy dealer cuz some are just tooo slowww. Theres definitely a lot of casuals playing super short stacked though. On weekdays maybe there will be 4 or 5 25/50 tables and 2 50/100. On Weekends u can double that nukber for each. It seems that even with its flaws this is the best option for low stakes poker in manila.

Masters poker club in Malate

Been coming here a while, has 3 tables of 10/20 that seem to always be running. 25/50 starts at 6:30, 1 to 2 tables. 50/100 starts at around 9:30. The interesting thing about here is that they have badugi or PLO almost everynight for both of these stakes. The later it gets the wilder the action gets, on weekends they have 100/200 on the top floor, something u cant find at RW. Problem is many players are regs, (still a bit fishy though) but late at night the fish start to come in. The players are 50% filipino, 50% korean, no other foreigners. Regs will softplay with each other, but i dont see any indication of flashing signs to each other or anything. Basically everyone knows each other though. Rake is also 10% with 300 cap for 25/50 and 400 cap for 50/100. Free food for 50/100 and its not bad, a pretty wide array of filipino dishes.

We will be travelling to the Philippines this January, 2016...
we will be in San Fernando, La Union... Marilao, Bulacan.... and Manila (going back and forth).

QUESTIONS:

#1 What is the best POCKET WIFI you or anyone would recommend to use for playing online poker during our stay there?

#2 What cellular service (data) is best for prepaid to use for playing poker online during our stay there? If your answer will depend on location... what's best for Marilao, Bulacan.... and Manila area?

#3 I also plan to play at the Asian Poker Tour ... while in Manila... any suggestion? warning? tip? ... anything would be appreciated.

SALAMAT PO!

Sounds unbelievable cheap for Manila and doesn't look too bad(well obv not a baller)... Though the 20minutes elevator waiting doesn't sound too appealing(though i quess there can be some waiting in more highend condominiums also)

Hey. Do you guys know any good sites for luxury condos in Manila? Long term rent. Seems like they few sites I'm finding by google are incredibly overpriced. No way is Manila more expensive then BKK or is it?

For accommodation it is actually, yeah.

For daily expenses like food and drink it's less expensive than BKK is though.

Isn't restaurant food quite expensive, streetfood about the same (but awful) and cooking at home about the same. I felt like by trying to eat reasonably well in Phils I ended up spending more than in Thailand overall.

Alcohol definitely cheaper, and visas.

Rent and utilities about double that of Thailand, comparing equivalent condos.

Seems like BKK is way more developed and better bang for buck. Guess I just have to deal with the ****ty visa situation and do the border runs for a while.

you are right on rental prices, wrong on food

pattaya is the only place ive been in asia where i felt priced out of the western food market, i would assume bangkok probably has more expensive places than manila

outside of makati you can eat just about anywhere in phils for reasonable prices, each city may have a few high end places but good $5 meals are easy to find
