Hi Sirs....I Cant do a massive TR but some first thoughts on this place. As i said i'm loving it but i was so desperate to get out of Thailand it might be impacting my judgment a little, having said that though i have been to manila twice before and was drawn back here, its only been a week so far so i'll see how i feel a month from now. If i had to guess i think i'll still be loving it!

So far i have only been exploring the Makati area (apart from going to ac for two nights) and have settled in an apartment near Valero street (wont say the name but i never gave that up about my thai places either) Makati is cool (well its red hot) but i like the area and massive lack of white faces compared to Bkk/Pattaya.

Comparing this area to bkk, so far Id say this has bkk beat on several points. Much nicer to walk around, the people are more friendly (imo) pretty near perfect spoken English everywhere around here making life easier for starters. The girls are not shy at all and have had tons of big smiles and convos struck up by them. Went on a date last night which i found a bit wired compared to thai dates as her English was better than mine and I kept slipping into monkey English lol. Oh and the street massage girls are great value for money and bloody good at their jobs (and the happy ending).

Errr bit brain dead as i been running round doing loads of ****. But lots of great things to say about this place, two thumbs up so far!

The only thing that may be uncomfortable is that the small children will watch you with curiousity for the first three or four weeks. I lived three miles outside of town and many of them had never seen a white guy before.

Wherever you go, you will be greeted with "Hey Joe!", a reference to WWII and GI Joe. They have great respect for foreigners and Americans in general (mostly undeservedly).

Don't be shy about stopping to talk to neighbors. Just walk right up to them and start a conversation. They will love to talk to you and you can make dozens of friends very easily. Keep your guard up as to who you can trust, but don't act defensive and mad. Be patient and try to understand unusual things they may do. If you do, they'll just laugh it off anyway, is their custom in uncomfortable situations.

Most Filipinos know English rather well, some BETTER than many people in America. I'm not exaggerating. I met a few people there that started a conversation with me in a PERFECT American accent. I asked how long one guy had lived in the U.S., expecting the answer of ten years or longer. He said...never, he works in a call center.

I know call centers have a bad rep here in the U.S., but I guarantee if you spoke with this guy, you wouldn't know he wasn't a U.S. citizen. He knew not only the language, but our idioms as well. He went on to explain that call center jobs are fiercely competitive and even he was always in fear of losing his job. They generally pay three to six times as much almost any other job, on par with doctors in some instances, but not as much as politicians.

Despite knowing English, many Filipinos are embarrassed to speak English to you, believing that you may think they don't know it well. I always tell them that they know Tagalog MUCH better than I know English. I won't be able to use this line next visit, however; I'm studying Tagalog using Rosetta Stone. It's AWESOME.
Thanks for the info River John. I did not notice your reply right away. One of the most heartwarming things is for the neighborhood kids to run up to you and give you high fives etc. The kids (outside of the tourist areas) can make you feel so special.

I also understand you playing it solo when it comes to other foreigners in the Phils. I tend to avoid them also when I am there. I have had too many disappointments when trying to be friends...

Also what's DIA?

hmm I wonder what happens when a filipino guy takes a girl out and she invites her friends, does he also pay? Or is it just white person standard?

Moving to work in Manila for a two year plus contract. Currently looking at flights from the UK in July time. I can't seem to get the flights cheaper than £750 ($1150US) is this about the right price?

That seems a bit high, unless UK airfare prices are usually higher then U.S. airfair prices.

Last summer, I flew from Manila to New York, for a little over $900. So you are paying almost 25% more then I was. I have a hard time believing prices are that much different between the UK and the US. Maybe you aren't looking at the cheapest possible place for flights.

Hmmm, its not that out of the ordinary tbh. I've been planning coming to phils for about 18 months and kept delaying because of the prices, I eventually just bit the bullet and shipped a flight that wasn't a lot cheaper than that. There are cheaper flights around but its a bit hit and miss as to when they are available.

You can get 500-600 using a middle east based carrier. I went for the cheapest which was Kuwait and it was a 24 hours of hell. No alcohol, no entertainment system and ****ty food.

I'd pay a little more for better quality airline + shorter journey time.

Thanks guys. Using skyscanner I did find some for about £600 ($1000uSD) ish. But seem to be with Royal Brunei Airlines. After hearding about the 24 hours of hell these flights do seem to be about 19+ hours. No booze, crappy flights and the fear of watching "Babe" or anything showing women in bikins thinks I should just go with BA. But flights are coming in at £1150ish ($1750usd)

Not always mate trust me, I've been monitoring the flights for the last 18 months or so, some dates you can, others not, the deals come and go.

Yeah I agree. Flying out of London this Summer with everything going on is going to be more expensive.

Maybe try looking at KLM out of Amsterdam?

Is this one way? Cathay Pacific has flights from London listed at 579.

Desipte the fact I am traveling only one way- you can't enter the Philippines without a return ticket within the twenty one days. So I have to lump it and get a return. It seems quite expensive with the fuel increases etc but I have found a flight for 800 return with Cathay Pacific....not too bad a price for the carrier.

dont have your return ticket take you back to the UK, just get a one way over there and then by some cheap ticket from cebu pacific or tiger air to somewhere else in asia for like $50

i feel like a thread veteran now

The return ticket doesn't have to be within 21 days. I've been coming here for 5 years, usually with a return 5 months later. If you are coming with a work visa you should ask the embassy if you even need one.

I'm planning on staying til early-mid December then head back to Thailand for a 4-6 possibly 8 weeks then make a decision as what to do next (assuming I can get my bz plans into full effect here).

Got a 2 bed with full on maids living area its about 150sqm, quite nice modernish, but a little ruff round the edges, 55k month, 6 month contract with option to extend. I don't know enough about rental prices here to say, thou last night met a guy who has a 40sqm studio right next to green belt for 18k per month he said he has lived there for 3 years so not sure if that means he has had discount or something, another guy says he has a big one bed for 25k he said its on the edge of makati near the skyway express.

To note, I think Makati is pretty ****ing cool place to live

+1. While I enjoy the PH MCD, Burger King seems better than average, even silly things like the lettuce/vegetables seem fresher and more crisp.
