Anyone to ask about living in the Philippines? Anyone to ask about living in the Philippines?

P.S. any ideas of bars close to Alabang that might be open at 2am onwards, and lively, and not full of hookers?

I'm staying at the Bellevue in Alabang and working just around the corner.

I'm not getting the attention you guys talked about (promised?) - perhaps because its just normal girls, who are just off-shift at one of the local call centres.
Try going in malls and interacting with them. You'll see fairly quickly, some girls are more apt to flirt than others. Small sample size and truthfully, call center workers on their smoke break won't give much attention I've never been to Alabang, is it foreigner infested? The more (young) foreigners in an area, the less attention

That said, I've mainly been working, and when I'm no its just the local fast-food complex - normally around 2 am in the morning. Should I just try talking to them? - shocking idea I know...
Sure, talk to them, make some lame joke or comment. Just try kumusta and you'll get responses, salamat when they give you change etc

One other question - I'm working my way through my intro to tagalog book and definitely getting there, but I'm hoping to find a local tagalog tutor, any ideas as to how to go about this?
Well GF/fling will happily teach you, yet they're mostly not great at teaching unless their English is very strong. http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/cl.../tagalog+tutor - you can use this site for anything from finding a nurse to replacing LCD screens
Put a couple general comments in bold, gl!!

what are kumusta and salamat?

kumusta is "how are you", but should really be kumusta ka - "ka" is you, or try kamusta kayo where "kayo" mean you in the plural, kumusta kayo should also be used in more formal situations, older people, doctors, etc.

salamat is thankyou

kick2dante, www.google.com.

JammyDodga,

Kumusta ka na if you wanna be Filipino
Kumusta po kayo in formal situations
muZtAh if you're a jejemon.

Salamat is rarely used. People say thank you 10x more often than salamat.

Even Filipino to Filipino?

That hasn't been my experience.

I hear Salamat or Salamat po much more often then I do thanks or thank you, when two Filipinos are talking to each other.

Even at Metro and other card rooms, I usually hear Filipinos say 'Salamat po' to the dealers when they win the hand or whatnot.

^Same experience with salamat, I'd even say for me that the salamat po/thank you sir ratio in stores was like 25/75. Paalam though is a word I almost never heard and people were like "wat" when I used it

Text messages are the most lol. I miss deciphering those weird abbreviations and asking randoms on the street

Pooter; no experience with them. I took a glance and some seem somewhat overpriced (5-10%), other than that it's strange they for the most part only mention district, but don't mention which building the apartment is in (which is VERY relevant). Seems legit tho

I planned to read the entire thread before posting any questions but only got part way through. I have to do the visa run in a few days and planned on the Philippines. Then I read that Manila is rated the worst major airport in the world.

Sounds like a nightmare. Is it as bad as it sounds? Any suggestions or advice?

its busy, crowded, lots of people looking for tips and the cabs always try to rip foreigners off but far from a nightmare. i got here on a extremely busy weekend night and the lines for visas where ridiculous, i just went and sat in a wheelchair and paid an airport dude $5 to push me through the handicap visa line that had no wait, no one tried to scam me at customs, picking up baggage was easy, i was in/out in about 20min.
