I will be taking a flight and this will be my first time.. Purchased the tickets about 2 weeks ago. Will be leaving JFK NYC to Taipei, Taiwan. I know that i should arrive 2-3 hours before my scheduled flight.

Some of questions are this. I will be bringing one bag with me with my stuff. I know you have to go through security and of that. Is that bag going to be allowed to be with you in your possession while your in the airplane so you can take stuff in and out while your at your seat? Reason i ask this is because i will bring my laptop with me and plan to use it while on the flight. I also see people who bring big luggage and the put it in a place where they cannot have access to it until they get out of the plane. Are all luggage put "inside" the airplane? I know this may sound like a very dumb question.

My flight is about 13 hours and then i have a 7 hour layoff. Then i have to take another flight which takes about another 3 hours to get to Taipei.
I know this sounds like a very novice question but I really don't know these things.

Also, i plan to arrive in Taipei at 12:05PM after my 24 hour flight when you add the flight and layoff period and plane change etc. How long does it generally take to have everything finished such as going through customs 30-35 times. I was told this by someone. So if my flight arrives at Taipei at 12:05PM, how long should it generally take for me to go through security and all that so I will be free to leave the airport. I am guessing 2 hours or so?

Also, i read that you cannot use your cell phone while on the airplane. Does that mean we have to close all your cells or just put it on silent? What if by mistake you forget and put it on loud or vibrate?

Do you think its a good idea to go to sleep if you have a 13 hour flight? Also, my layoff period is about 7 hours before the next flight. What can i do during the 7 hours while waiting for the flight? Am i allowed to leave the airport and then come back in without trouble? I will be in Seoul during that time and then take the flight to Taiwan which takes 3 hours. Is there wifi at these airport? Are they free or do you have to pay to use it?

Can anyone help me with these questions? Thank you very much!

I'd be happy to answer some of your questions. Flying for the first time can be a bit confusing.

When you check-in for your flight, the person working at the check-in desk will check your large baggage for the cargo department. You will not have access to this during the flight.

You can bring a small carry-on big with you on the flight. You can't bring any fluids, foams, or aerosols on with your carry-on (not even drinks), so make sure to pack lightly. Security may ask you to turn on your laptop for them to show it is a working device, so be prepared.

Usually it will take 1-2 hours to get out of the airport once you have arrived at your destination. You have to go through customs and immigration, and then you have to your designated luggage carousel to pick up the luggage you checked (ie did not bring as carry-on with you).

Good rule of thumb is to turn off your phone when boarding the plane, as both a courtesy to the flight staff as well as the other passengers around you.

Usually you will not be able to leave the airport during your layover. You will often get off your flight and just go to the waiting terminal. They will most likely take care of transferring your checked baggage over to the other flight (check to make sure though!). Wifi will be available but is often a nominal charge (such as $10 for 24 hours).

If you have any other questions let me know!

no tourist visa required for South Korea for US passport holders, so you could, theoretically, leave the secured area of the airport and collect a south korea stamp.

The problem is that Incheon airport is like 45 min from Seoul. Incheon was voted best airport in the world and I believe they have a casino and an indoor golf course. I wouldn't bother trying to leave the airport. Since Korea has the best internet in the world, you should definitely be able to find wifi. Just get some food, shop at duty free, etc. I would recommend sleeping on the plane if possible. 13 hours is a long time to sit in one place and sleeping makes the flight go by much faster.

I've spent time at ICN and that airport is fantastic. You will have no problem resting there. They have what's called a Jjimjjilbang which is basically a spa where you can sit in any number of different temperatured rooms and even sleep. Not sure how much it costs at ICN as I only used them in Seoul, but I'd be shocked if it's more than 20usd.

Pretty sure there are travel lounges in the airport as well with quiet locations.

For serious though. I love ICN. Spacious, clean, quiet.

You usually can bring small containers of liquids like shampoo but you have to put the containers in a plastic bag so security can see them (unless there's something special about this flight that I don't know about).

If you want a bottle of water or anything else to drink, don't buy it until you go through security or you'll lose it.

And don't worry about asking questions like this. None of us were born knowing this stuff. Hope this helped.
