Adjusting hand values based on depth of money and position Adjusting hand values based on depth of money and position

D. Brunson in SS emphasizes playing pps, suited connectors and the like in deep stacked NLHE cash games. Negreanu makes similar suggestions for major tournaments with deep money. By contrast, Sklansky's hand rankings for limit holdem emphasize playing high cards, and QJo is a much better hand than 86s.

In general, the shallower the money in NLHE tournaments, the more value high card hands are and the less valuable small pps and low suited gappers are.

Also, if you are raising (or limping) light in early position, low cards play relatively better, but in late position hands like Ax or K/Q with a medium to high kicker play OK. That is because the hands that call you in late position are less likely to dominate a mediocre high card hand.

I think a lot of tournament players make the mistake of overplaying small pps and other low cards with shallow money. Similarly, early in live fairly high buyin tournaments, it is common to be more than 200xBB deep. In those situations, people often overplay hands like KJ or even AQ or AK. With deep money, playing hands with potential to make more than 2 pair is important, as is position.

Hadn't seen anything printed or posted that spelled this out so explicitly, so I decided to try. Also, interested if anyone disagrees or wants to elaborate.
