Also, it turns out that we will be spending a considerable amount of time setting up an entire development environment because the company doesn't see the value of having one set up for us.
BB,

did you just deploy straight from local to production before? Straight from a github branch to production? Are you using *shudder* Subversion? I'm gonna assume you're not on EC2 with access to immutable nodes and blue/green deployment and other 2015 stuff, since that would literally blow my mind given your description of your company.

My Facebook feed is full of people in an uproar over the Confederate Flag being banned or something. I guess I don't get the anger here. How does the banning of a flag that flew in the South 150 years ago really anger people that have lived in the North their whole lives?

WTF am I missing here? Who gives a ****?

Freedom, yo. Everyone should be free to be a racist if they want to.

Not banned - just removed as the state flag of South Carolina which I'm pretty sure didn't even happen so ....

It's not the code that's the issue. It's everything else.

We have 4. Count 'em, 4 different development environments. And 4 QA environments. None of them match.

What is missing is tables with our data. And data. Developers actually have look at production and create tables and hope they match, instead of the DBAs pushing them down for us. Not only that, there are different versions of software (servers, java, you name it) in every environment. It's a monumental effort to run a single program.

My task is to modify the ginormous batch job. I've been there 4 months and today was the first day I was able to get it to run error-free. No files were produced (like they should be) but, hell, it was a victory.

We use TFS. For java we just pass over the ant script and tell them to do a build and deploy it.

The project I'm on is written in SAS. Pretty much the worst possible "language" anyone could have chosen.

Yeah its blown up mine too. None of the people that have posted that kind of thing have actually surprised me by doing so. Its being adopted as a cause by the socially conservative faction of the culture war. Seems like a pretty dumb hill to die on to me, but whatever.

I only looked at SAS 'code' a few times years ago and I have to say:

Where do I send the condolence gifts?

I do time series econometrics in SAS. Or I did. UMad Bros?
06-24-2015 , 11:11 PM
SAS is literally the worst and if you like it you are history's greatest monster. My wife is not really a computer person but she did a lot of statistical research and her institution required SAS. I was looking at her programs once and I was like, this code is terrible, I can probably help you make it better. No, I couldn't, because SAS completely lacks the ability to do anything right.

I like matlab because I'm an EE and have tons of experience with it. R is OK though. Python with numpy is OK if you know python. SAS though, more like LOL.

I'm flying to ****in France on SAS. ****, maybe it'll suck.
06-25-2015 , 01:01 AM
Matlab>>>Sas but I couldn't be bothered to install the time series/financial econometrics package and learn how to use it and I'd already written the SAS code so....

I do remember just inputting/opening data files in SAS was a nightmare compared to every package. Like that's the simplest part jfc.

STATA is pretty lol. Not very flexible, but ezmode. reg x y montecarlo gg no re.

I work in SAS almost every day. I usually just use proc sql.

man I hated MATLAB in engineering. Worst thing ever.

Anyways, Mathematica >>>> MATLAB.

I have never given anyone a wedgie before but I have the uncontrollable desire to start.

SS, this is the last straw. Officially time to gtfo. Matlab is goat, and that's all there is to it.

It depends on what you're doing. But generally speaking lol no.

Labview is a really great way for people who don't know how to program to get themselves into serious trouble.

Thank you all for reminding me that I'm not really that much of a nerd compared to some of you.

ok, i guess i just have hatred for it since college. i used to do all my matlab homework by standing next to the computer lab printers 30 mins before class and the homework would just come right out of the printer nice and hot!
