The show is as far as or further than the books in the main story arcs. The main benefit of book reading at this point IMO is that the book readers remember important stuff that happened in earlier seasons cause you absorb information better reading.

For example the show goes through all the back stories of the Targarean and StArk families so fast you probably don't really remember any of it, some of which is anticipated to be important later on.

the books have story lines that are completely ommitted from the show.

and the only story line which was progressed farther than the books (including published twow chapters) is stannis. everything else is either caught up or so radically changed that it doesnt count as a book spoiler (i.e. jamie in dorne)

I was thinking the same thing. The books are basically caught up at this point. I was putting off reading them because I didn't want to spoil anything, but now it could be fun to read them and try to guess along with everyone else what is going to happen next.

yeah once you read all the books you become spoiler proof and can read all the wacky tinfoil theories. there are probably more words written in the fan theories than there are in the actual books by this point.
