I've had shin splints when I started playing basketball. I hooped everyday for 3+ hours and they finally gave up. I stopped playing for about a month or two and I always iced the area everyday. They eventually went away and I made sure that I gradually increased the amount of running instead of running full-on right off the bat. Make sure your shin splints go away and then slowly increase your running time so your body gets used to it.

Sounds like better shoes, softer running surfaces, and taking it slow are the way to go. Thanks for all the comments everybody. They have been very helpful for the most part.
