I graduated college in '98 an it was basically the same, just different hot button issues and different methods for explaining things. During my tenure as a student they fired a teacher for showing us a movie (outside of class) that was deemed inappropriate. Honestly, it probably was, but it was a movie carried by the local video store with no restrictions or anything, something any of us could have watched if we liked. Anyway he sued them, won, was "reinstated" but left pretty much immediately. The whole thing was handled about as cack handedly as the above link sounds.

This is just like, my opinion, man, but I think the reason he was seen as a threat is that he was pretty close to us in age. He was a prodigy who had his PhD in math by something like 21 and at the time was about 23 I think. He was a free thinker / offensive person, kind of aspy and lonely.
