Yeah Smolov JR is fine for any of the basic compound lifts. I could never do that kind of press volume no matter the intensity (and I think Busto said his shoulders were pretty worn down after his cycle).

I squatted and deadlifted while on it. Cut the squat volume by about 50% and kept deadlifts normal (since I do them pretty low volume anyways).

I just realized I've been taking 1 tbsp of creatine instead of 1 tsp for awhile now. How bad is this?

*EDIT:*
actually, the label for my creatine DOES SAY that 1 serving = 1 heaping tablespoon. Now I'm confused. Everything I've read online says 1 tsp = 5g = 1 serving.

FWIW, I'm using the generic creatine monohydrate from GNC. Maybe this brand is less dense?

It doesn't matter. The additional creatine just isn't really having any impact. I think you have to take A LOT for it to have a negative impact. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
05-26-2011 , 01:31 PM
Yeah it doesn't matter. Some people still load their creatine, taking 20-30 grams a day for a couple weeks before dropping down to 5 grams a day. Only thing you've been doing is wasting money, not hurting yourself.

Can anyone comment on the serving size for this brand:

My label says 1 serving = 1 tablespoon. But that just seems wrong. Is this a typo?
05-26-2011 , 01:45 PM
Maybe 1 heaping teaspoon = 1 flat tablespoon

She seems like a really great and humble person. Hopefully she recovers from the personal/coaching issues that have taken a toll lately. Im pretty sure there is a whole lot of untapped potential for strength athletes in NZ, particularly amongst the Polynesian population. It's a shame there isnt more of a pathway to professionalism in any sport bar rugby and rich white people sports. There is no such thing as college sports, and high school is pretty under valued too. I went to a HS that had a really strong rugby team, and we didnt even have a single weight in the gym.

Prob not a typo, more like the manufacturer wanting you to take a triple/quadruple dose so you'll run out faster, earning them more bucks.
05-26-2011 , 02:10 PM
That is what I take. My label says one heaping teaspoon (6.2 g) which equates to 5 g of creatine monohydrate (as does the online one). Possible typo or reading issue?

Ah right. Damn, that explanation even made sense.

Need some opinions from the H&F experts. Apparently this guy(Kawhi Leonoard) could only bench 185 lbs 3 times at the NBA combine:

[IMG][/IMG]

HERE are some more pics to give you a better idea.

He is listed at 6'6" without shoes and 227 lbs with a 7'3" wingspan.....I say something fishy has to be up and theres no way he can only bench 185 lbs 3x.

I feel like football/basketball or wrestling/track is 100% what I'll advise my sons to do. And have a home gym and teach them to lift for real whenever they're old enough and show an interest. It's so clearly the best way to develop into an all-around athlete.

That's assuming they are as into sports as I am/was and want to be serious about it - not gonna be that dad if they don't want it.
When I was a kid I would've been so pissed if my parents didn't let me play any sport, so I'll never limit my kids options. With that said, am I the only one who will definitely push safer sports over football to their kids? Seems like its a bunch of head(and other) injuries waiting to happen.

I always thought it sucked that wrestling and basketball were during same season...I never could play both in HS and they were my two favorite sports. I do agree with your overall points that track/weightlifting in offseason would be great.
05-26-2011 , 04:42 PM
I'm no expert, but wouldn't his long arms mean he has a longer ROM for BP? Also, he's benching about 81% of his body weight. I can bench about 72% of my body weight for a set of 5 (I've only been doing SS for about 1.5 months). If he doesn't bench very often, I don't think its a huge surprise.
05-26-2011 , 04:59 PM
ya advise is prob too strong a word, and I'm not stopping them from doing whatever they want.

I guess I'm just saying that if it develops to where a spring sport like baseball is secondary interest I'd say "the way to be serious about basketball/football is to run track in the spring and lift weights all offseason" and then let them decide

Not sure what to say about football injuries, I never played football but feel that kids who do got a lot of value from it in terms of strength/toughness/conditioning, especially strength. I guess wrestling does the same but I'm kinda biased against any non-basketball winter sport.

One hugely positive thing I'll say about HS football...

As an incoming HS freshman, its a tough social time for a lot of kids...bigger school, going from being the oldest(8th grader in middle school) to the youngest, increasing social pressures, etc. Football starts up a month before school stars, and I thought it was great for me socially as a freshman because it helps you make a ton of friends before school even starts.

I definitely feel like an old geezer whining about injury concerns, but football really isn't safe at all when you look at the amount of injuries per practice or per game(or when you look at long term head injury issues).

one of my fb friends posted a status calling for a cure to diabetes.

So... It looks like I'm moving from backs (fast skinny guys) to the forwards (slow fat guys) in rugby. I should really try and gain 10kg. I had to read this again.

Quote:
There was a time at the Old Westside gym where I couldn't gain weight to save my ****ing life.

There was this dude who trained there who could just put on weight like ****ing magic. He'd go from 198 to 308 and then to 275 and back down to 198. And he was never fat. It was amazing.

I finally asked him one day how he did it.

"You mean I never told you the secret to gaining weight? Come outside and I'll fill you in."

Now remember, we're at Westside Barbell. And this guy wants to go outside to talk so no one else can hear. Think about that for a minute. What the hell is he going to tell me? This must be some serious **** if we have to go outside, I thought.

So we get outside and he starts talking.

"For breakfast you need to eat four of those breakfast sandwiches from McDonalds. I don't care which ones you get, but make sure to get four. Order four hash browns, too. Now grab two packs of mayonnaise and put them on the hash browns and then slip them into the sandwiches. Squish that **** down and eat. That's your breakfast."

At this point I'm thinking this guy is nuts. But he's completely serious.

"For lunch you're gonna eat Chinese food. Now I don't want you eating that crappy stuff. You wanna get the stuff with MSG. None of that non-MSG bull****. I don't care what you eat but you have to sit down and eat for at least 45 minutes straight. You can't let go of the fork. Eat until your eyes swell up and become slits and you start to look like the woman behind the counter."

"For dinner you're gonna order an extra-large pizza with everything on it. Literally everything. If you don't like sardines, don't put 'em on, but anything else that you like you have to load it on there. After you pay the delivery guy, I want you to take the pie to your coffee table, open that ****er up, and grab a bottle of oil. It can be olive oil, canola oil, whatever. Anything but motor oil. And I want you to pour that **** over the pie until half of the bottle is gone. Just soak the **** out of it."

"Now before you lay into it, I want you to sit on your couch and just stare at that ****er. I want you to understand that that pizza right there is keeping you from your goals."

This guy is in a zen-like state when he's talking about this.

"Now you're on the clock," he continues. "After 20 minutes your brain is going to tell you you're full. Don't listen to that ****. You have to try and eat as much of the pizza as you can before that 20-minute mark. Double up pieces if you have to. I'm telling you now, you're going to get three or four pieces in and you're gonna want to quit. You ****ing can't quit. You have to sit on that couch until every piece is done.

And if you can't finish it, don't you ever come back to me and tell me you can't gain weight. 'Cause I'm gonna tell you that you don't give a **** about getting bigger and you don't care how much you lift!"

Did I do it? Hell yeah. Started the next day and did it for two months. Went from 260 pounds to 297 pounds. And I didn't get much fatter. One of the hardest things I've ever done in my life, though.
And then I had breakfast.

edit: obv I'm only half-bulking

Must be that damn freaky long wingspan that zaps all their strength working through that huge ROM.

Or, more likely, he has no interest in benching, has put no effort into getting reasonably strong or mechanically efficient at it and has terrible form. And then probably didn't WIM very much at the combine.

Shrug.
