Say we want to optimize fat loss from cardio workouts (assume any generic cardio exercise). What can be done with the type of nutrients and timing of food intake pre/post workout to help squeeze every little fat calorie out of the workout? Oh, and please do your best to explain the why behind your answers.

References would be awesome.

Also, is this a dumb question? Why/why not?

Not a dumb question, but not a very practically fruitful one either.

Type of trainee is also important as the things change with sedentary fat dude vs. stage bodybuilder trying to get from 6% to 5%.

Will return to the thread tomorrow. Leaving the office now.

Let's go with normal dude that wants to lose some fat. Not totally sedentary, but not an athlete either.

Not sure what you think you're asking or what your intention is tbh

There are a lot of variables when it comes to determining "optimal" nutrition in conjunction with exercise.

It's an evil secret plot to take over the world.

The deal is, I think I know a lot about nutrients, timing, blah, blah with reference to sports performance, strength training, and recovery from any type of strenuous exercise, but I don't really know much about meal composition/timing for optimal fat loss. Is there an optimum, and if so, what is it? Also, if your overall energy balance is correct for weight loss, does what you eat before/after a cardio workout even matter that much?

Basically none of it matters. There are some situations where you might be taking advantage of nutrient partitioning or drugs but it's still a small detail.

The overall deficit created over a long period is the most important factor by a mile.

Eating after your cardio to avoid major catabolism, and keeping intensity lower if fasted, will likely positively influence results

Worrying about recognizing when you need a major refeed will make a much bigger difference in results than the exact composition of your post-workout meal or whatever.
