I guess I always figured even if the parents didn't initially expose their kids to online media or video games or whatever, they would end up at a friend's house and come home crying demanding it in their lives.

10/6

PP W3D1
C2 Row: 23:35/6000 m (21 spm)

1:57.9/21 spm overall
1k splits
1 - 1:58.5/20 spm
2 - 1:57.7/21 spm
3 - 1:58.1/21 spm
4 - 1:57.9/21 spm
5 - 1:58.1/22 spm
6 - 1:57.2/22 spm

Skipped back day again, but got in the push-ups; given I stayed up until 4 playing cards last night, it seemed like enough punishment. Managed to keep a relatively consistent pace for the row; did a quick 500 m before the work set, so maybe that helped.

Fell back a bit on the second sprint, but managed both at a faster pace than Sunday's row (was supposed to shoot for two seconds faster; got there on sprint 1 but was a bit short on 2).

I dunno. My son has his own iPad and an obvious iPad addiction, but we never got him any console systems, and he seems ok just playing console games when he visits friends, and doesn't seem to have any particular yearning to have his own Xbox.

My sisters kids have their own iPads, but the parents really restrict their access to social media/gaming; and they seem ok never being able to play Minecraft/Roblox/Fortnite at home; although they want to play these games on my son's iPad every time they come over to our house.

In my small empirical observation, it seems kids are generally ok with what they have as long as they haven't been habituated for more; but it is very hard to put the toothpaste back in.

Re: school tablets, I'm not sure how I'd feel about that; certainly it doesn't seem necessary where they are now (first grade), but I'm not such a Luddite that I'd begrudge them doing some non-trivial amount of work on them when they're older. They have "station" work now in class, and I think one of those is on a tablet, but it's the minority of what they do.

Re: poker, there's actually a fairly vibrant semi-underground Indianapolis poker scene; this one group runs a game four days per week (two downtown, within walking distance for me, and two up north), and then various other games at random places (one by the racetrack, one at a local Knights of Columbus, a few others I'm sure) that I haven't yet made it to. The games I play in are 1/3 (mostly NL, but some PLO), but it plays more like 2/5 in terms of opening raise size even without taking straddles into account. There's no real limit on buy-in amount, so by the time I arrive 1k is pretty reasonable. There are definitely guys that blast off 3-4k every now and then, and apparently the KoC games are even bigger.

Yeah, I don't see the need for iPads. Idk. It's fine. I am not really mad about it as much as annoyed by more devices. My 9yo had a popup reminder her to play some non-school related game. FFS how is a 9yo supposed to ignore that when adults can't even?

Mix games w/ nl players playing plo & plo8... Wow. Enjoy.

Reasonably k. Probably just going to try to add reps to squat and deadlift for a while given they're not the focus right now, and 225 and 275 respectively seem like barely passable benchmarks.

Legs have been feeling generally heavy lately, but fingers crossed that I keep acclimating as the meters increase.

To... indoor row?

Just checking. If so, good trollin' them PLs. If not... missed opportunity. K.

Wedding was actually pretty uneventful, thankfully; no real snafus or embarrassments, which was welcome, if slightly surprising. We hosted the morning after brunch for around 60 people the day after, which also went off without a hitch. With that said, I did take two days off from the gym while eating like **** and drinking too much, so not a banner few days from an H&F perspective. I was feeling a bit sluggish today, but hopefully I'll perk up later on this week.

Used the shitty rower and checked the drag factor; my normal damper setting (4) put it at 80, so I pulled at 6 and got the drag to 105. The pull definitely felt heavier and I fatigued faster, so room for improvement there. No split data, but I was probably around 1:58-2:00 for the first three 1300 splits and 2:00 to 2:02 for the last two.

r3:00 - 674m
1k2 - 3:49.0 (1:54.5/23 spm)
r3:00 - 684 m
1k3 - 3:47.0 (1:53.5/24 spm)
r3:00 - 692 m
Total - 23:26/5698 m

Goal was to meet or exceed the W1D2 interval pace for the 500 m sprints, which I did (I think - I didn't record those splits, but marked 1:55-1:56 for each of the sprints); that I managed to get faster every split was also a nice surprise.

Bit of an adventure this morning, as the fire alarm at the house kicked on for about ten seconds at 5 am, likely because the upstairs heater kicked on for the first time this season. My wife called the fire department, so eight trucks rolled by and verified that there was indeed nothing actually wrong. Then my wife complained about not being able to fall back asleep after things like this for about five minutes before falling asleep, while I laid awake until 7 am. Good times.

1.3k4 - 5:09.8 (1:59.1/21 spm)
1.3k5 - 5:09.8 (1:59.1/22 spm)

Kept the pace much more consistent than W4D1, so that was promising. Skipped OHP yesterday to go on a ~2.5 mile hike with the boys, and have a bunch to do today to get ready for a trip this week, so I just squeezed in the row while the wife and kids were at church.

loc-huahua signal: I assume I should get a heart rate monitor if I'm going to keep this up? Just a watch, or something with a chest band? Literally no idea what I should be looking for here.

I would just get the polar chest strap and I believe it connects to the C2 by Bluetooth or ANT or whatever that is.

I never really looked up rowing theory. In the 80/20 book it talks about how all endurance sports follow the 80% easy /20% moderate+ intensity guidelines for optimal training.

But sure, if you wanted to be a nit you would find max heart rate and then base all your training on percentages of that. And if you wanted to be more of a nit, you would find your lactate threshold while rowing and base all your training off of that.

Or you could just keep doing what your doing and be pretty close. And that I assume, is following a program based on RPE and most of the training is lower RPE.

If I were a fellow rich like the big 3 whites in this forum (KC, downtown, montecore) I would geek it out and tell the wife I deserve a Garmin 935 for my training. But not sure how much a rower would get out of that.

The nondonk move is always the chest strap that connects to your equipment.
