I just had a "Woodworking for Mere Mortals" ad on youtube. I have no idea if it's any good since I didn't watch it for more than the 5 mandatory seconds. But anyway the point is I'm sure youtube has tons of videos on the subject.

Weird coincidence (lol coincidence, I blame NSA) that both words "woodworking" and "mortal" was both in that ad and recent discussion here.

How about a pool table?
I mean I have zero experience in planning/drawing furniture but how hard can that be?

Serially tho, a stool of some sort?

FWIW I'll just draw/plan the table and outsource the actual woodwork to my dad.
He's got the experience and the tools.

I'm thinking that I'll get him the raw materials that are needed and a parts-list with dimensions/drawings of each part.

Once he gets the parts done I'll do the assemblying.

I hatehatehate middle-of-the-road solutions (ALWAYS aim for the best quality there is, ALWAYS) but I think I may have to forget about using solid stone for the slate and go with high quality MDF or something similar-ish.
Need to do some more digging and find out about all alternative options there is.
Stone would be the nuts, tho.

I hear cycling while being high on the amphetamines is all the rage these days.

Saw Amazing Spiderman 2 last night. What a piece of ****. I was at least excited for the after credits sequence that was supposed to feature the X-Men, but that was a waste of time, too.

On the way out, some comic book nerd accosted us. He asked what we thought of the movie. I treat comic book nerds like homeless people. Just keep walking, you can't trust them. But Mrs. Rhymes had to respond. And then when she said the film made no sense, he told her the damn thing.

"You're a girl, it's probably not for you. If you just read the comic books it would all make sense."

LOL suck a dick mfer.

where the fack do you live where a nerd who is probably a classic example of introversion, has in his behavioral repertoire, the ability to approach IEL strangers right after a movie and ask them open ended questions about it?

does not compute
05-02-2014 , 09:46 AM
Fakeb, I was expecting an 'it was me' spoiler after your story...
05-02-2014 , 09:55 AM
From sample size of a few comic book nerds I knew back in high school days, unfortunately they all aren't classic examples of introversion.
05-02-2014 , 09:58 AM
Many aren't so much introverted as they are social outcasts. They make the most aspy H&Fer look like Don Juan.

Spoiler:
it wasn't me

Yugo is in an art-related field and his wife is a vegetarian, Cha. Give them 5-6 years to realize that they'd be happier in the 'burbs. Maybe 7, when their assumed kid(s) have to go to a school where nobody can read yet miniYugo is on book 11 of Wizards of The Night Man Moon Chronicle II and they realize he will have to practice his ABCs at school for 6 hours a day. I'd bet the under on 7 years, I guess.

Probably grumble about it and do nothing. That is what I would do.

The comment requires at minimum a power snatch, I think.

If you are hosting I would just put out a veggie tray and salad. Minimum effort and satisfies the request. If she bitches tell her to f-off.

Thanks man! Although we have not bought this house yet at all. Just put in an offer (a bit lower than what our realtors suggested as I think we will get more information from their counter offer that way).

That poster is pretty epic. I've never owned a Peja poster. But the legend will live on if I have that in my new lifting room. Probably exceptional for WIM too. I can just picture the immense WIM of world champion Peja getting a title with bad back problems, and grind out an extra rep.

What Skelly said and if she says anything just let her know she's welcome to bring additional food for her kid if she has issues with your approach.

I'd recommend taking the bundles of extra $$ you make from job hopping and pwning negotiations and just fly out mortal wombat to do it for you.

The kid has no male role model. He is already weak, whiny, and unpleasant to be around. Mom is obviously ******ed. Some sort of intervention might be necessary.

From 8th grade through high school, I built picnic tables and adirondack chairs as my "job" while my friends all worked at a nail factory. (literally packing nails and screws in boxes for 8/hr). I would make a chair or table whenever i needed some money. Had just about every tool imaginable. Also took woodworking in high school and the teacher was awesome. Former contractor. Made a solid mohagony octagon poker table. (I was one of like 4 kids out of all 7 classes that did any work).

Anyways, I think its a cool hobby. If I were you I'd figure out something you could use outdoors and look up plans online. (I say outdoors because it will require less finish work and small imperfections/mistakes won't be as noticable) You can buy plans that will give you a "parts spec list". aka - buy four 2x4s, eight 2x6s, two 1x3s, etc. Figure out what tools you need and buy a few and start building up your tool set.

Don't buy super cheap tools cause they will suck and make you frustrated.

Brutal watching all the chances they had and weren't able to capitalize on. How many times in the last few games have they had point blank chances and not scored? They need to get some mighty ducks coaching and clean up the trash.

Holy hell, this. Harbor Freight might look really attractive pricewise but it's 95% junk. There are a few cheap things that are workable, typically stuff that is made in china by a particular factory and sold and a lot of different places. Even then, be careful. QC is turrible.

All of my main WW tools are either vintage extremely high quality stuff or new decent stuff. My table saw is a powermatic 66 that's about as old as I am. If I take good care of it it'll still be as good as anything new when my son is as old as I am.

I spent a lot of time on places like oldwooodworkingmachines mailing list and basically figured out what stuff was standing the test of time, and looked for those at auctions, estate sales, craigslist, ebay, etc.

You can get amazing pro quality stuff for home depot prices this way. That PM66 I bought cost me $400. A new one is something ridiculous like $2000-2500. You will not find anything at home depot that is as good as my $400 saw.

Regarding school, I always thought I'd be ****ing my kid up at school because I have no tolerance for the bull**** they are throwing down there. But it turns out he is a rule follower and will probably get along fine at school. I guess that's OK, we'll see how it goes.

I was sitting next to an elemntary school teacher yesterday at soccer practice and I wanted to smack her in the face. She's talking about **** at school and the stories she's telling me, I'm just like, really, get your ****ing priorities straight.

The kids were decorating their journals or some **** and while she has her back turned one of them draws an X on someone else's journal. She goes ape ****. She wants to know who did it. She makes all of them sign a piece of paper saying "I did/did not write an X on so-and-sos journal". Who ****ing cares? Say "well, whoever did that, that was disrespectful and I hope we don't see it again". Give the wronged kid some extra decorating or free time or some ****. No need to make a ****ing federal case out of it.

I gotta say though - no snitching from any of the kids. For stuff like this, where no one got hurt, I am actually a little happy about that.

She also told me that if a kid misses a day of school (for sickness or whatever) they have to stay inside at recess until they've made it up. This is second ****ing grade. One of my friend's kids tried to get her mom to let her go to school when she was sick so she wouldn't have to miss recess for the rest of the week.

It's so soul crushing and I don't know what to do. I hate to see these kids stepped on like this, all my son's friends are young and full of life and I love to see them playing together. I hate to think back on school and what a ****ing waste it was for me.

Meanwhile in Russia...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JD0jVRyIAs

Apparently a lot of people are rustled because they think this is animal cruelty. What the **** is wrong with people?
05-02-2014 , 12:19 PM
That's just cute. However, pretty sure there is tons of animal cruelty going on in Russia anyway. I know the local "zoo" in the Ukrainian city of the developers I work with is basically a bunch of half staved animals in dirty cages. But that actual video doesn't seem necessarily cruel if you have domesticated pet bears. I mean, if anything it's child cruelty if that bear isn't actually domesticated properly imo. Kid gonna get eaten next time.
