They have dates on them. I believe the first one is from 2 years ago and the more recent ones are from earlier this year. Btw, I only recently truly figured out why DL form is so tough for me and why I've struggled so much - one big reason is I kept my shoulder blades back and my arms aren't long enough for that, I need the extra inch or two to hold the bar and keep my shins relatively vertical.
Anyway, using a belt is whatever - if you use it properly it will help the lift and help you keep your core tight. But it won't really protect your back (besides helping keep your core tighter at heavier weights than you could normally lift).
I use one b/c I bought one and so I use it. If I never bought one I wouldn't use it and wouldn't really care.

Keeping tight the whole life is pretty much priority #1 in weightlifting afaik.
