Increase running distance? Increase running distance?

So this is my first time posting in this thread after hearing great things so I thought Id give it a shot.
Ive recently have tried to get into shape and started it off by getting into running. A little back story: Ive always been overweight but very athletic. I'm 5'8 and at my highest point my weight was 310 (when I was in high school, Ive been out of college for 2 years now). I'm currently 215ish and have been around this mark for roughly 2 years. Over the last 6 months Ive been running semi regularly and have seen some progress. At the current day I'm running for 15mins at about 6.2 speed and cant seem to get past this mark. After I stop I continue speed walking for 1.5 mins at speed 4.1 and then run for another 5 mins before I again stop. I can repeat this process and do 3 more times. I cant seem to get my running up to say 20-30mins without, any suggestions? My goal is to run a 5k (time doesn't matter) without stopping by November. I know I need to start losing weight and though I get a good sweat going I don't feel like I'm losing much weight doing this either? Any suggested routines to help me obtain both of these goals?

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

Being honest with yourself would be a good start.

I'd read the FAQ if you haven't.

just do it. you may not like it, but if you're used to running for 15 minutes, you're damn well able to run for 16. do that for a week, and then you're damn well able to run for 17.

the jog intervals are pointless. if anything, do sprints after for as long as you can.

quit running on the treadmill. it doesn't burn as many calories or recruit the same muscles as running a track/outside. get a comfy shoe and go outside.

train like you want to run. if you want to run a 5k, why the **** are you measuring yourself in time? measure yourself in distance. on your next running day, see how far you can go. take a day off, and then the next day add a quarter mile. repeat until you can do 3.1 miles.

distance running isn't designed to lose weight. you'll lose 100 calories per mile, but your metabolism decreases the second you stop running. FAQ. oh, and change your diet.

thread hijack:
what underwear do you guys use when you run? I have used underarmour since I was maybe 12, and have slowly but surely lost all but one pair. I do not want to go out and get like 4 more pairs (30 bucks each??? fk that) nor do I want to do my laundry every time I run, but is this my only option???? does anyone successfully run in boxerbriefs?

Haha it has only been a week since I made the realization. I needed a quick break from it anyways, but I was either going to go buy lots of underarmour tmrw or chafe myself to hell.

in your specific case btw:
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
tonnes of people use the couch to 5k program and most are overweight. i would be amazed if you follow this and still can't do a 5k.

if you are only running for weight loss, there are better methods. but since you've stuck with running for 6 months, i recommend continuing it since you obviously like it, at least a little bit.

if you are running and not losing weight, keep in mind that a small container of ben and jerries ice cream is equivalent to like an hour and a half of running. so is 7 beers. just consider that for a second and keep in mind that you are running for 15 minutes... that is about 1 beer. so if you were eating exactly the right amount of food, and then you ran your 15 minutes, but you drank 1 beer, you'd be at maintenance.

gl. you can def do this in 2 months no matter what shape you're in at the moment.
