I'm no chyro but surely after any reasonable weight, squating without pad has to be terrible for your neck/spine.

In the plus column: you're not a chyro [sic]

In the negative column: you're not an expert on anything else related to your comment

if the bar was in contact with your neck/spine it would probably hurt yes

Pin your shoulderblades back and rest the bar on your delts. No contact with spine.

P.S. pad or no pad, the weight is still carried by your spine. The thing that holds your upper body up, you know?

Yah but there is a massive difference between the weight pushing against individual discs directly or even worse between discs and the load being spread and supported by contact with a pad or muscle.

I don't have any delts

how much of the load is carried by the spine itself vs the spinal erectors?

This forum is becoming a helicopter parent for spines. Jesus.

this forum is the left nut low, its like the tail bone of twoplustwo that was broken during childhood and never quite healed correctly.

So many coccyxs around here.

That sounds totally evidence based. Better take my shirt off lest it accidentally pad the bar too much and hurt my back.

This. The load path is the same, the pad just adds eccentricity by moving the load further away from the column, introducing moment (adding to the maximum compressive stress your spine feels since it will be resisted by a tension/compression couple).

Wouldn't tightening your upper back or having large muscles have the same effect?

Maybe, but those plus pad would be worse. I'm not sure it's a problem in any case.

Seems legit. Given the variety of bar positions for squatting (including lol Zercher and lol SS bars). I don't think we need to worry about inane arguments about forces ripping our spines apart in healthy adults with good form.

i wish my gym had a SS bar just to try it out.

I love trap bars, i wish they had weights on them, seen a few different kinds and they feel like different weights all the time. I default to assuming 55

Does anybody use trap bars for over head press? Saw it suggested a few times online but have never seen anyone do it.

I have. Feel it more on lateral delts then a standard bar since weight starts in line with body instead of in front.

Do you clean the weight up? The trap bar at my current gym is tooo narrow to be supported by the rack

I mean the weight i would be pressing is manageble to clean just seems tricky given shape of bar
