The downside is that everyone is so friggin strong and I get embarrassed showing up in my oly shoes to do puny squats with worksets that are their warmup weights.

Saw a 20ish dude do some DL singles and he finished off with a 700lb-er at a speed and ease that made me think he had more in him. He didn't even look that huge. That's some serious weight, right?

Best part: $400/year and my work pays half
Jelly about the gym. Not jelly about the lifters (roids obv).

Roids or not, 700 is a damn big DL. G4S has a PR DL of ~700 I think.

Saw some guy today using the calf raise machine to do shrugs. I don't know how effective it is, but seemed more legit than the intended use of the machine.

Are calf raise machines not legit (honest q, ive never trained calves)? If not, what is?

I used to do it a lot when I was new and never saw any results out of it. The only thing that made my calves get bigger was when I started focusing on the heavy weights for squats/deadlifts and then every part of my leg got bigger. I'm sure they probably do a good job of toning them up, but nobody has time for that.

calf raises are legit, but i prefer the machine where you sit down and do like a horizontal calf push thing. that way u can get a good glimpse at those calves in action.

Pretty sure the key to having good calves is to just be fat, every fat guy has great ones. The downside of course is having to otherwise be fat

or be an islander like hawaiin or something. they always have swole calves.

i have to walk 200ft uphill every day so hopefully in some kind of auto calf enhancement mode as long as that keeps happening. i feel them burning during this one 5ish min stretch every time.

CR,

Brah, you still use machines?
General Gym Observations Quote

One of my best friends growing up had the biggest damn calves I'd ever seen and he was one of the most naturally strong guys I'd ever seen and by no means fat. Dude was a vagina and never went out for football until his senior year, but I remember his calves destroying the socks he tried to fit over the massive things.

Bro sets up to squat in the smith, setting up a bench underneath first, so I'm assuming box squats. But then he proceeds to do about 1/8 ROM, without his butt ever coming within 2' of the bench. WTF goes through people's heads?

There was some girl squatting today with her boyfriend or something, pretty sure the guy had her go way past failure so he could spot her by grabbing some side boob for an extra five reps or so. Pretty expert move tbh

Goofy looking gray haired fatass doing upper body only exercises in raggedy-ass cargo shorts and Vibram fivefingers, then acting like a whiny bitch when one guy was bogarting all the 5 lb plates.

Spoiler:
It was me

I think one of the most tilting exercises is upright rows in the smith machine.

In my limited time in the gym I've seen a fair number of guys training with girls and then proceed to load them up with way too much weight forcing them to fail ridiculously. For example last week there was a girl benching with 2 guys, she managed to push out 3 reps of the bar plus 2.5's on each end for 50lbs. The next rotation they load another 5lb plate on each side for 60lbs. She objects, pauses, hems and haws, they finally pressure her into it. She obv gets pinned on the first rep and needs them to lift it off her. Then they toss on the 185 they're working with and finish their sets as she slinks off to some machine.

I honestly think a lot of guys do it to make themselves feel big & strong relative to the women they're working out with as a way to show off. It drives me ****ing nuts. What they should do is give that girl some 20lb dumbells > 25 > barbell benching over the course of a couple weeks and not pin the poor girl the moment she steps into the weight room. It's no wonder women don't like weightlifting.

I'm going to add that to my repertoire of moves. I'll put it right up there with "stop short and grab."

Same with kids. I've yet to see a father load his kid up with weight the kid can bench press on his own. Every rep is assisted with the father making a big deal about "how to do it right". The father always ends up doing reps with < 135 or horrific reps with a bit over 135.
