Q: Do the bro's in your gym(s) regularly do this?

They do at mine. I think it makes them feel like boxing/mma stars...

A pt at my gym still has his high schoolers doing quarter squats and deadlifts off stability boards. I came very close to telling the poor kids something but restrained myself.

gah i have been in that spot but substitute "prime ali" for UFC champ

I'm sure Ali would still win, but this would at least be closer. Watch UFC 1 to see how poorly boxers do against mixed martial artists - and excepting the over the top movie stuff, that's what Bruce Lee was.

There's also footage of an exhibition match where Ali "fought" a Japanese professional wrestler. Obviously the thing was a total joke but it definitely shows how ill prepared Ali would be to win a fight on the ground.

No one ever really uses the squat rack in the gym I frequent (I have never witnessed anyone else squatting there ever aside from badly on a smith machine) and I walk in on Wed and as usually its empty.... or so I thought. A guy had 5plates and a 25 loaded on each side and the bar was sitting on the safety rails for the worst shrugs I have ever witnessed.

He wore a belt and used chalk (I was shocked also) and all the other tards in free weights were watching him intently with looks of awe and amazement..

I of course was pissed since I had to BP first instead and only watched as I hoped and prayed for some kind of disaster to occur. I was disappointed as generally the kid seemed to have his **** together doing PCs and other non brotastic exercises.

There is also another couple regulars that will shrug 80lb dumbbells and spend 5 minutes applying wrist wraps, ITS ONLY 80 ****ING LBS

maybe ask that first guy to drop some knowledge? sounds legit. other people you mentioned make good decisions but seem to lack physical ability to put on straps.

FWIW when I say worst shrugs ever it literally looked as though he may in fact injure himself immensely with what he was doing, it was not the standard I am should shrug it was absurd jerking, painful looking, 2 inch ROM shrug that I cannot picture having any benefit.... I could easily be wrong. I was more annoyed at someone using the ONLY squat rack in the gym for something that was not squats.

...and your post comes off as a level but again I could be wrong.

sounds like power shrugs. not leveling with the rest of the post. 80lb dbs are heavy enough. at least to not be something out of the ordinary. i've seen a guy strap up for 10lb lateral raises.

Some of you guys are seriously ignorant in underestimating what Bruce Lee was capable of.

youre an idiot for believing bruce lee could actually do half the stuff attributed to him. dont get me wrong i think he is awesome and badass and cool as ****, but so much unverified stuff has been attributed to him that fanboys are quick to take as gospel which in reality there is very little chance he actually did.

I am a huge Bruce Lee fan but seriously, even the crappiest lightweights you see on the undercard in the UFC would beat Lee easily. I am tired of the fan boys thinking he could actually do some of the ridiculous **** attributed to him.

why is that? i understand some of his accomplishments are overstated, but why couldn't he handle a lightweight ufc guy?

iirc Bruce Lee defeated Chuck Norris.

Ergo, Bruce Lee can defeat god.

Because the lightweight UFC guy is much better at fighting.

i was hoping for a more substantive explanation. I got that much. you're basically saying any decent MMA guy can beat up a world class martial artist. I find that surprising.

In what way is it surprising? Bruce Lee was born into the wrong era.

Also saying 'any decent MMA guy' needs a qualifier. Almost anyone who ends up fighting in the UFC now, even on undercard etc is exceptional.

Your post contains an inherent contradiction. You basically said "any decent martial artist can beat a world class martial artist." Which obviously makes no sense.

Bruce Lee never entered an equivalent of the UFC or anything from which we can judge his skills. Its mostly myth and legend. The few competitive fights he did partake in were like circus sideshow events compared to modern competition.

I love Bruce Lee, but I think this putting him on a ridiculous pedestal with these myths just take away from his legend as they are so absurd.

See, this is how I know you have no idea what you're talking about. I'm no one's fanboy, but I will respect the man's ability to fight, and he certainly was an incredible fighter.

A UFC lightweight fighter is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-20 pounds heavier than Bruce Lee and has trained specifically to win fights against world class fighters who have benefited from decades of experience as to what fighting styles work best against fully resisting opponents in an MMA ring. Those are some pretty giant advantages for the UFC fighter.

If you're not used to getting hit in the face, it comes as an unpleasant surprise. Like anything else, getting hit requires training.

It's an unpleasant surprise when you are used to it. It just doesn't last as long.

These hypotheticals are always ridiculous, though, are we like transporting Bruce Lee straight from the set into the future?

I mean, this Hardball47 guy is obviously smitten and making awful, awful arguments but saying anything definitive is absurd. Like debating if Dave Winfield could get drafted into the NBA today or something.
