I cannot even remotely get it more than a couple inches up. I guess most of you probably don't because u aren't just randomly at the gym. But if the last thing I do in a workout is pressing, I usually just leave the bar racked until next workout. But then I walk by and see it and try to do it once and am like zomg die.

And @Kyle, that is pretty awesome.
i don't even like touching light weights when i'm not warmed up, when i'm training someone and getting them a moderately weighted kettlebell, it feels so heavy, its probably mental though.

Thats how close it needs to be. It takes practice alright.

Improving the rack means learning to really slam the elbows up in the air. Maybe have someone hold their hands out flat at the correct height in front of you and practice jumping up whilst slamming the elbows up to hit their hands. Then practice hang cleans with an empty bar focusing on slamming those elbows up, learning where the hands must 'let go' of the bar for it to be done correctly etc.

Baby steps. You'll get the hang of it.
I do hang cleans, Im not sure if that changes anything. How far are you supposed to drag the bar? All the way up your thighs?

zinna- I just did some hang cleans and got vid in my log.

re: 5rm presses. When completely cold, even reps using ~70% of my max feels ridiculously heavy. I try to always start with just the bar, time permitting.

It's amazing how heavy ridic light stuff is when I'm cold/lazy

I have none. I guess they're good if you have some need for them. But for most people, eat some sauerkraut or something.

i usually have some red scuffs on my thighs starting like 4 inches above the knee that goes for 6 inches or so after a clean session. no idea if that's really good but i keep it pretty close/touching my thighs on the way up.

Nowhere does he mention starting low and working up to 495. Maybe that way your back will be able to take the compressive forces huh?

or that the spine is best at bearing a load in an arch, not a "straight vertical load"

or that the load is going to end up on the lumbar spine anyway (in flexion) when noob little Johnny does heavy leg presses for the first time and lacks hamstring flexibility
