84 total

Lat pulldowns and horizontal rows

How tall are you? Just trying to put the weight/lifts in context

A little more soft in the midsection than I would like, but all in all not too bad.

Yeah, that's prettay prettay good.

I'd imagine that in the Venn diagram of people who look like that and people who can't hold it for 3 hrs, you might be all alone in the middle.

Looks solid except that cottagecheesey midsection. Quick lipo in Colombia for a dime and I would be envious.

Thanks guys. I had a disagreement with management behind the scenes and was going to boycott 2+2 in protest, but then someone made a disparaging remark of Sam Harris in the politics forum, and I felt compelled to ride to the rescue. 100 posts later and I guess that means I am back.

Anyways, the gym I am working out at now has a trap bar, and I have been staring at that bar for a long time, wonderin, but then I finally took the plunge and have done a couple workouts that have gone fine. Heaviest set I have done is 225x5, so not exactly setting world records, but as far as I can tell I have been able to keep my lower back in extension, which is a pretty big win for me in itself. So will continue to conservatively add weight and see how it goes.

Today I did a bench workout
255x5,5,4 - which isn't too far off my all time strength records at easily 10 pounds lighter, so that is nice, although my left shoulder is feeling kind of crunchy right now, so will have to monitor that.

So my last trap bar deadlift workout I worked up to 275x5 without any major issues.

I could see grip becoming an issue at some point though if I keep adding weight. Obviously you can’t supinate one hand so I guess straps become a necessity at some point if you want to go very heavy in this exercise.

Of course the most likely scenario is I hurt my lower back and this all becomes a moot point though.

No, those days are long past me. In years past at a higher BW (~185) I maxed out at 225x14 and 275x5, which both equate to over 315. But anytime I lift heavy for an extended period my left shoulder starts to hurt and I have to take a break, and this seems to be getting worse with time. My shoulder is still sore from my last bench workout a few days ago and it might be time for another break.

More likely in the short term I try to lose more weight and get weaker as a result.

It is ok. A few years ago I was having lower back problems to the point it hurt to carry my (then) toddler son around. Now he is 7 and I can play basketball with him pain free, so keeping some perspective I dont see any need to push things that hurt, and risk other things that are more important.

Yeah totally get that. I feel the same about sciatic issues wrt SQ/DL. Finally feeling better, no reason to push it for PRs.
Curious, where in your shoulder do you get pain?

Hmm. I admit I don't know shoulder anatomy that well. Kind of the outside. I assume it is some sort of rotator cuff injury. Seems most of these things are.

Recently did a trap bar DL workout
Top sets were:
315x5x2

-Video'd the first set. Starting the first rep my lower back buckled a little, but nothing too major. I was actually focusing as hard as I could to keep the tension on my hamstrings and glutes, which seemed to work reasonably well. But I am guessing if I ever load it up to a high enough intensity my lower back will round in predictable fashion. Oh well.

Well Idk much about it either really. But I used to get pain in the front center the following days after benching heavy which ended up being anterior humeral glide. Was able to fix this by getting better shoulder retraction and less ROM through bigger arch. Just incase that may be similar to what you're experiencing!

Yeah. Changing the focus of what part of my shoulder area is being stressed would probably help mitigate the issue even if I wasn’t able to diagnose it correctly. I focused more on arching my back and doing more of a powerlifting style decline motion and it seemed to help marginally.

Bench
225x10, 10, 8
-it seems either due to age and/or getting smaller I am just not going to be able to hit the 10x3 benchmark I could consistently stay at in days of yore.

Accessory work- avoided stuff that hurt my shoulder and did stuff that didn’t. Interestingly hammer incline machine hurt a lot, but hammer super incline was fine.

Also recently did a pull-up 10x10 workout, which was a first. But I was taking some long rests at the end so an * I guess.

Yesterday did a press workout that topped out at 145x5, which seems like it sucks, but it does equate out to a 170 1RM. I haven't weighed myself recently, but would guess I am close to 175. So looking at it from that perspective, the 145x5 press doesn't seem all that bad.

So on a scale of 1-10, how excited are you about Anthony Davis. I was at like an 11 when the news broke, but I quickly tempered my expectations.
The Darkness That Comes Before Quote

Well, assuming he stays (and there is no reason not to assume that) for the long term should be a thing to be excited about. Having a 1st team all NBA talent just entering his prime is something that is real hard to have, and gives any team a huge edge from the jump.

As far as the near future making a run with Lebron I dunno. They have no draft or trade assets, so they have to build their team in FA. And I just dont know how probable that is. The Klay and Durant injuries really throw a monkey wrench in the FA scene, and I dont know how things are gonna shape up.

Showtime is back, that is fosho. Now just need kemba or get Jimmy away from Monte's team.

If the Sixers offer the max (5/190 I think), then Jimmy stays - from what I hear, they're pretty committed to trying to keep him. Kemba's probably a better fit anyway and makes the Lakers really exciting/intriguing.

That seems like a bit of an overpay for Jimmy. I'd take Kemba > Jimmy for the same price, but better still would be to go for depth. For that kind of money you could probably get 3 good complementary players instead.

I know jdock wants my Lakers Hot Take!

They basically have 2 of the top 5-7 players in the NBA atm. You can basically only really claim Harden/Curry/Leonard are better than either, and two of those have fairly robust injury histories (like... AD). Embiid is around there. Jokic and George are healthier versions that broke out last season that are in the realm. Regardless, it isn't like there are a ton of guys who move the needle in the NBA.

One of the exogenous interesting questions in team construction since lol regular season is essentially playing a big 3 till the wheels come off (or big 4 with Woyas) or having real depth around a single star. Lebron has a tendency to relegate ball dominant players to shells of themselves, and none of his coaches have been very forward thinking. (Staggering Love's minutes would've been great to watch him run some offense from the elbow when Bron sits.) I don't know whether that is Bron or the coach, but it is what it is. At this point, I think they'd struggle to build any real depth, and would be better served with a 3pt shooting PG who can serve as a secondary ball handler and stagger some minutes when Bron is resting. Fill the roster out with ring chasing vets and hope for the best?

I think these picks are pretty overblown in value. Bottom end 1st rounders are worth less than top end 2nd rounders, and its hard to imagine a situation where the Pelicans aren't getting conferred some low value picks in this deal. Obviously anything conveying this many picks and swaps is gonna be brutal, but would you rather go full Nets or just end up like the Hornets or Knicks? An extra swap sandwiched with every young asset and every first is pretty low value to the Lakers.
