Day 7:

[x] Diet
[x] Workout
[x] Booze control
[x] Sleep (8 hours)

Explained RFL to my dad. "Wow, you'll never make it". Thanks for the confidence... heh

Fasted training on Xtend and 1/2 cup of coffee. A couple other factors too. Interesting, will discuss...

4/21/12:

Squat: 3x5 @ 210
OHP: 5, 5, 4 @ 97.5
Chins: 6, 5 (174 bw though :/... cut starts now haha)

Training fasted was pretty interesting, I almost felt kinda disconnected from the workout at times (like a mini out of body experience or something). Also worked out very shortly after waking up and having only fasted for say 10 hours or so, which are slightly confounding factors. Also noticed peak effects towards the middle of my workout, which probably has to do with caffeine/bcaa about 5 minutes before workout start... will probably push that back next time.

By far the biggest difference was that I was very impatient and never wanted to rest between sets, and in fact rested between sets far less than normal. Probably would have had OHP and a bit more squats if I had rested more, workout was <1hr.

Definitely going to continue fasted training on Saturdays... weekday not feasible unless I start skipping lunch, which I'd like to do but people would lock me up and think I have an eating disorder and body dysmorphic and etc (which would probably be true because I'd go home and eat like 800 cals because I'm doing RFL... ha)

Day 9 (Fri):

[x] Diet
[x] Booze factor
[x] Sleep factor

Day 10 (Sat):

[x] Workout
[?] Diet (probably a deficit, depending on booze)
[?] Booze factor (didn't get hammered... success?)
[?] Sleep factor (like 6 hours on a couch... felt great in the morning though, so success?)

Factors beyond my control imo.

Day 11 (Sun):

[?] Diet (probably a deficit, depending on booze)
[?] Booze factor (didn't get hammered... success?)
[x] Sleep factor

I consider these small victories, which maybe says something about my frame of mind. Accounted for, anyway. Back in action now.

Also, programming... probably going to do something RPTish on the same stuff I'm already doing. Might continue to take BCAAs pre workout since I'm essentially fasting for 5-6 hours between lunch and workout.

Pretty adequate workout today.

4/23/2012:

Squat: 5x215; 5x205; 5x195
Bench: 5x150, 6x140, 6x135
PC: 5x3 @ 152.5 (PR iirc)

So there you have it, something reverse pyramidish. I'd be ecstatic if I can keep something like this up while dropping 8lb or whatever.

RFL is weird. I've eaten a salad and a lb of chicken and that's like 100g protein @ 600 cals? I'm really not hungry and I don't feel like eating more chicken... 3 scoop protein shake? Meh.

You're either ******edly unhungry, or the caloric deficit hasn't hit your ghrelin yet. Knowing you, it's both.

lb of chicken = ~125 g brotein. Good rule of thumb: all lean meat is 25 g brotein/100 g (or 1/5 lbs for the metric impaired). Fish is 20 g/100 g.

I find it funny how 3 of the H&F regs decide to do RFL starting the same week after no one's done it since forever.

Interesting, I see all different figures and I never know what to use. I have some packaged stuff that's listed at 22g protein for 110 cals @ 3oz, which comes out like 585/117 @ 1lb I guess.

I'll be interested to see how your RFL experience plays out, being on the leaner side approaching very lean. GL.

Thanks man.

I know some producers inject their cheaper meat with water+salt (5-10% or so?) - that might account for lower brotein content.

Yea, definitely pumped with broth ,to keep it juicy I think.

3/28: 167.4
4/4: 171.8
4/9: 170.0
4/16: 172.4
(4/21: 174.0)

4/25: 167.0

Haha... water retention... new goal is 160 though.

Haha, probably.

4/25/2012:

OHP: 3x100, 5x90, 6x85
Chins: 7, 6 @ +5
DL: 5x320, 6x295

Trying to PR OHP on RFL after not making cleanly last time was probably ambitious, but I'll take it. I'd have really liked 4-5 reps, but oh well, next time. DL was tough but fine... good shot at (re?)claiming 2xBW next time. I can't remember if I pulled 330 @ 165, but 325 @ 162.5 is very much in reach and works just as well.

Edit: I can't do math. 325 @ 162.5 might be doable in TWO weeks. It'll actually probably be 330 @ <165 if anything.

Day 14 (RFL 3):

[x] RFL
[x] Workout
[x] Sleep

Random note, I feel like I'm eating a lot of calories for RFL. Basically 170+g protein comes out to 850 cals since even my chicken/tuna/whey is like 80% protein cals at best... throw in fish oil (45), salad veggies (50-100?), and rando 0 calorie stuff that's probably actually like 3-5 (drinks, dressings, etc) and it's very conceivable I'm up past 1000 cals. I guess that's still a pretty ok defecit, but more than I expected to eat.

Right, so... health and fitnessy stuff. Not gonna bore with great detail so here's the summary.

--Diet/sleep/booze compliance has been fine except for one ridiculous weekend
--Workout compliance has been very good
--Weight loss has been very poor (prob a combination of retention stuff and that weekend)

BW: 167-168

Maxes achieved over the past few weeks:

Squat: 220x4 (felt I easily had 6, but rushed/lost form)
OHP: 100x5 (100x3 last time though...)
Bench: 152.5x5 (feel like I've made some form improvements with the legs)
DL: 330x5 (probably way too much rounding)
PC: 5x3 @ 155 (more like 3, 3, 2F1, 2FF, 4 but I'll count it)

Gonna go work out brb. Also, plan is to eat towards maintenance for a few days (no choice to be honest, but also) to transition into not dying in Las Vegas, and when I come back if the damage isn't to bad I'm just gonna eat and lift for a while.

Edit: strong chance I've very slightly crossed under 20% BF, which is pretty cool and probably a personal best. Gonna lose it all instantly, but hopefully a nice stretch of compliance following.

Responding really well to something, can't say exactly what but I suspect it's RPT. Might just go full blown TM when I get back. Loving the max effort sets, somehow progressing across the board... don't care if I claim the title for weakest TM log of all time.

5/12/2012:

Squat: 6x220; 6x200; 7x185
Bench: 5x155; 6x140; 7x120 (shoulda been 125, oops)
PC: 3x3x157.5; 2x2x157.5

Yep.

Dunno why you're having trouble with LP, but once/week progression is certainly better than a rugged LP attempt that turns into <= once/week progression.

I just quickly glanced through both your threads. I looked through old videos (saw one of you shirtless at 191) and I looked at your gains in strength. Saw the recent pictures also.

My question is, how much LBM have you gained the last 20 months?? It seems to be a very small amount.

Your body is just not responding. I think its time to ditch workout routines of the last two years and try something totally different.

My guess is your body would respond much better if you hit every bodypart twice a week and started going to muscle failure more often. Lyle has a decent routine for that on his site (I think its called generic bulking routine). Basically in my opinion you need much more volume, see if your body responds to that.

p.s Also change name of thread. "Bixby gets fat" is too negative and may be the culprit. Go with something like Saw's gets ripped thread.

Yeah, very small. Never been able to get a solid estimate because of a relatively high BF% but clearly not packing on the muscle over here. Overall pace is kinda sucky but trying not to think about it that way, I guess what's more relevant is I'm probably at my best in terms of BF% and strength (and lb for lb strength).

Yeah, I've considered this often, but I refuse to believe I'm a special snowflake and can't respond to basic barbell training. As Soulman mentioned, lots of intermittent dieting and not-killer genetics probably aren't helping, combined with maybe suboptimal wim/form/consistency at times... I think I'm finally comfortable with the process and how I react and what I need to do to be successful, so the next few months will be important. I may consider something radical if the summer is a failure.

As an aside, I can't see adding a ton of volume helping, because if anything my recovery is complete garbage. It's not that I'm not putting enough stress on the muscles, it's like if I do a pushup during the week I suddenly fail bench the next haha.

Somewhat on a serious note. Please reconsider title of thread. I think "Bixby says fack genetics, I am getting ripped" would be a better title. Then everytime you are in gym your thoughts are going to be on defying mother nature. Sounds like some stupid "secret" pyschology, but hey we need everything in the repetoire to try and defy genetics.

And by the way I agree somewhat that your diet has something to do with it. But in this case I think its a small part. Sounds like you get enough protein from reading your posts so I think it might something else. I might be in Vegas in June. Probably be hitting the gym. It would be interesting to see your intensity levels at the gym and your workout.

Where are people working out during the WSOP in Vegas? I have been considering joining "anytime fitness" but I don't think they have good powerlifting equipment. Any ideas Bixby?

Hard to be gaining much LBM when you're losing BF. Anyone with bixby's starting point obviously has their work cut out for them if they want a ripped body, having both to lose a fair amount of BF and gain mucho muscle mass.
