I know each form has it + and - but can anyone share their opinions on the best form if I'm looking to tone/shape up, and be able to hold my own if I ever get into a fight.

Sounds like tae-bo might work for you. Check it out.

Do you have any areas you're looking to tone up in particular? Some martial arts focus on the buns/thigh region for instance but others will tone your core better.

More of the core area. I'm developing a beer belly

Tae-bo seems a bit girlish from my what I've searched on google

I think the form that carries over best to a street fight is jiu-jitsu b/c most street fights end up w/both people wrestling on the ground.

Practicing a martial art is not going to cause a major change in how you look. You might burn a few calories and lose a little weight, but you will get much more drastic results from dieting. If your idea of how you want to look involves any muscle definition at all then you're probably going to have to lift weights to achieve that.

Boxing, Thai boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sambo or Judo are all good if usefulness in self defence situations is the main thing your after. They're all quite intensive too but i'd give the edge to boxing and thai boxing.

Quick question: How dangerous is boxing, really? I've always wanted to get into it, but all the brain damage hubbub kinda scares me. If you're almost always wearing helmets in the ring (unless you're doing srs bizness boxing), isn't the risk negligible?

I've had a hard time with this as well, because the same MAs that tone up your core, do nothing for your inner thighs. And then the other ones make you big and bulky.

just practice the five finger death punch (an ancient form of the deadly tae bo) on a swiss ball 10-20 times a day. Either that or watch 3 Ninjas Pt 2 and copy their every move.

don't do a martial art if you're just looking to tone up and ****. Hell probably half the ppl at my BJJ gym (who have been doing htis for years) have beer bellies.

If you want a better looking body then lift weights and diet .

For self-defense in a street fight situation: Krav Maga. To tone/shape up: diet and SS. ezpz

Step 1: Get Netflix
Step 2: Add Fight Quest to your Instant Queue
Step 3: Watch each episode and pick the style that you like
Step 4: Go start a fight at a bar and see what happens

My main goal is to learn MA for self defense but I was hoping getting in shape would be a by product, guess not? The thing is time in as issue if I do MA twice a week I might be able to workout once a week if I'm lucky

I think the best fit for you would be Joe Son Do. Here's a video of the creator using it to full effect against an opponent's fist.

Go for Muay Thai kickboxing if you prefer to learn striking, BJJ if you prefer to learn grappling. Or find a school that has both. Make sure the school does sparring.

Just buy some bear spray man, seriously. If you wanna learn MA, great. But don't do it to think you're gonna take a knife away from a crackhead trying to steal your wallet.

muay thai is generally considered a good MA for self defense, plus it is great fun and really tough work. add some weight training in there too.

Yeah, don't forget that the best way to survive a fight is to avoid it in the first place if at all possible. Starting up in martial arts training doesn't make it ok to go looking for fights. I realize this contradicts my previous advice, but after careful consideration I decided that using your head is always the first choice.
