Killed it!! Unofficial time of 27:51, a full one minute and 25 seconds better than my personal record! Comditions were almost ideal, about 48 degrees and a 5-10 mph breeze...pretty chilly at the start but I quickly warmed up and felt great the whole way. I'll post official time and finishing position later...

Day 111

Race day! This was the first year for this race so the turnout was fairly small, looked like maybe 200 for the half marathon and about 100 for the 5K. The weather was great, about 48 at race time with a bit of a cold north wind.

I started out very fast and found a group of about 6-8 that I could pace off of. The course was very flat through downtown so I was able to maintain a pretty constant speed. I knew after flirting with 9:00 the first mile I could post a really good time.

The second mile was even faster as we were a little sheltered from the wind. I got into a bit of running war with one other guy as we passed each other several times but I ended up pulling away from him in the third mile.

The finish line was at the minor league baseball stadium downtown and featured the only hill of the entire race but it was very small. Once I cleared that it was a sprint to the finish line and I had a pretty decent kick left.

I ended up finishing 3rd in my age group and 34th overall. I'll look up the results online when they're available and see how many total runners entered. I couldn't be happier with how it went and can't wait for the next race!!

Breakfast: Protein shake, chocolate muffin-481 cals

Lunch: Ham, roast beef, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, butter beans-935 cals

Dinner: Shrimp Alfredo w/ penne pasta-1032 cals

Snacks: Chocolate delight (dessert with pudding, graham cracker crust, cream cheese & cool whip)-542 cals

Totals: 2990 cals, 167g protein

Running
Mile 1 9:07
Mile 2 8:53
Mile 3 9:06
5K 27:52

Great job!

I can't wait to be down there in a few weeks. What's the daytime high temperature like? As long as we make the 60's, I'm ok with it. It's been unusually warm up here (40's during the daytime). I'd actually like it to cool some so that we got some snow for skiing.

This week it's gonna be low to mid 70s during the day and mid to high 50s at night...that's a little warmer than usual though. Unless you get unlucky and a cold front comes thru I think you can expect at least mid 60s during the day, think that's about the average for December. How long you gonna be down here?

Day 117

I worked my second job for the first time all school year. I've done some sub teaching the past couple school years but hadn't this year because I've been getting plenty of hours dealing. Our hours have thinned out a little this month and I need to sub at least once every 90 days to stay in the system so I picked up a job today. Delayed my run until late afternoon and did 4 miles. It was close to dark so when I did my first mile in 10:54 I decided to just keep that pace and see if I could match it every mile...only missed by one second on the last mile!

Breakfast: Protein shake & bar-360 cals

Lunch: Usual breakfast-638 cals

Dinner: Baked chicken breast, rice a roni, green beans-812 cals

Snacks: 2 Skinny cow, granola bar-390 cals

What do you think my ceiling is? If I get down to 180 lbs or less could I realistically run a 22:00 5K? Sub 20? I'm 41 years old and 5'11". I've never smoked a cigarette in my life and rarely drink...not sure how big those factors are.

who knows, but your genetic ceiling definitely won't matter, it's just the question how close to it you'll get.
if you'd spend the next few years focussing completely on running, getting as skinny as possible and run 100+mpw, you probably reach sub16... ?! but that's obviously not really a realistic scenario
assuming you stay healthy and get down to 12-14% bf (that will be quite a lot below 180lbs, btw) and run an average of 30-35 mpw without any breaks or injuries, i would say that you'll run sub22:30 in a year (end of 2016) and sub20 a year afterwards. probably even faster than that.

just so you have a completely random guess... but mostly it will just be a question of how much running you'll do (and that you'll continue losing weight).

but pick less lofty goals for the medium term. (of course, sub20 5k is always a nice round goal, but it's still very far away). but a sub2h HM is imho a lot closer than you probably think. sub 60 10k obviously, but this won't be a problem at all.
if i had to pick 2016 goals for you: loosely ranked from easy to hard
- sub 60 10k
- sub 1:30 10mile
- sub 2h HM
- sub 25 5k
- sub50 10k

that's definitely not the ceiling yet, but you won't get bored over the next few months
