I bet my roommate $20 he couldn't do 500 pushups in 2 hours. He is in very good shape. 6'1" 180 with a max bench of 225. How good is my money here?

If he doesn't do pushups a lot, it'll be worth the $20 just to see him in agony the next few days. Punch him in the chest or obliques whenever you get a chance.

If he paces himself, like doing them in sets of 10 he should have no problem.

Id be interested in trying this...want some more action?

You're probably giving your money away.

I know 2p2er who recently had a couple of prop bets about # of pushups in 24 hours (I think). I'll see if I can get him to weigh in.

You have one minute to do 12 pushups. Then rest for two minutes(Note: If you do the 12 pushups in less than a minute which you probably will, then you have extra rest time).

Then do another set, but this time make it 13 pushups(you still have to do it within a minute). Then rest 2 minutes again.

Then go back to 12. Alternate between 12 and 13 each set.

Thats 12.5 pushups every 3 minutes which equals 500 pushups in 120 minutes(2 hours).

Really doesn't seem that hard at all to me.

Yeah, I don't doubt it's easy for the first 200 or so. I dunno at what point muscle fatigue sets in and it starts to get really painful.

Actually I think if you're allowed to drink gatorade or whatever during that would make it a lot easier.

For example, I think doing 1000 pushups with an unlimited time span, but no food or water allowed until you finish would be really really hard.

my gut reaction is that this is going to be hard for him to pull off (with decent form). When you start failing at pushups, you don't recover very fast, and before you know it even sets of ten are not gimmes.

I got this PM from Irieguy, a respected STTFer who's also a doctor.

Re: pushup prop bet

From: Irieguy

I did 1000 in 24 hours. Nobody can do 500 in 2 hours unless they are a gymnast or something.

I'm not a gymnast. I'm practically a geezer. I can do this. Those who would like to bet me I can't are invited to bet met I can't.

A solid crossfit Cindy score is "20", which is 200 push-ups in 20 minutes (as well as 100 pull-ups and 300 squats).

I think I can do this in 90 minutes-- an hour might be a stretch.

crossfit gives girl names to their workouts. apparently cindy has something to do with pushups + some other stuff probably.

Cindy is a name for a workout. The workout is: do as many rounds as you can in 20 minutes of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 15 squats. By solid I mean a good score that will be achievable by those with some dedication and an amenable body type for pull-ups and push-ups-- 20 is a good but unremarkable score.

I don't know who thinks of this as easy or hard, or how much of either. I know I and others could do it. I suspect a guy willing to take this prop can likely do it as well.

i think i could do 500 in 30 minutes or less, an hour would be so easy i would feel almost feel bad taking a prop bet on it. i do a workout like crossfit cindy, but i do 20 push ups, 20 squats, and 20 dumbbell swings, and im able to get 20 rounds in around 27 minutes, thats 400 pushups in about 26 minutes while im practically out of breath the whole time from the squats and swings.

OP, you're giving away money if he does pushups with any regularity. Maybe if you made it 30 mins that could be tough.

yep thats your only chance: chest has to touch the ground and arms have to lock out at the top, all with back straight.

Guys, this is really a whole lot easier than you would expect it to be. Especially for someone who is in really good shape already. I'd bet it can be done in under an hour for someone is excellent shape. To give an example from personal experience, here is one of the routines out of Ross Emanait's book "Never Gymless." Grab a shuffled deck of cards; Aces have a value of 11, face cards are 10, all others are face value. For every black card you turn over, you do that many pushups - ex. Ace of Spades = 11 pushups. For every red card you turn over, you do that many burpees, which is essentially a squat thrust but you go down into the bottom position of a pushup when you throw your legs back and you jump up as high as you can when you stand up - so you are essentially doing pushups in this exercise as well. The goal is to make it through the entire deck of cards. This would equal 380 reps of which 180 are true pushups and the other 180 reps have a pushup movement in them. It took me a about an hour to complete the deck and I was not in excellent shape by any means.

I have almost the exact same height, weight, and strength level of your roommate and I would take this bet. Doing 5reps/min for the first 20 minutes then doing 4reps/min thereafter is all it takes. I ocassionally do the 200 pushups in 20 minute workout and am usually struggling pretty well by the end, but I think 5 or 4 reps would dip below the threshold of causing significant fatigue. It's by no means a gimme, but I think you may be taking the worst of it. Reduce it to 90 minutes and the odds tilt heavily in your favor.
