Headphones!!! Headphones!!!

Noise cancelling is most effective at cancelling constant noise sources like engine noise on a plane, train, etc. It's not designed to block speech, etc.

Like Yeti suggests, it sounds like what you want are closed-back headphones, which will both isolate you from the outside environment, and isolate your music from being heard by others.

My recommendation for closed-back headphones are the Audio-Technica ATH-M50. You don't need a headphone amp to drive them, and they are fantastic for the $. If you want to spend even less, the Sennheiser HD280 Pros are also good.

There are also noise isolating ear phones... they seem to work the best imho. in ear with a good seal, like the Klipsch X10i

I have the Momentum wireless. Basically the momentum 2 with bluetooth and noise canceling. They sound great, even on bluetooth. Build quality is excellent, mine have seen heavy use the last 6 months and there's hardly a scratch on them. Noise cancelling leaves a bit to be desired compared to Bose though.

I'd probably save my self ~150$ and just buy the momentum 2s if I was to get a new pair now...

Just looked up Audio-Technica ATH-M50; got great reviews. Think I'm gonna pull the trigger on these guys.

Thanks for the recs!

best earbuds?

Listen to hip hop and EDM mainly.

Have been happy with beats but they always break after a year.

Ok, I lied. Ordered the momentum 2.0's on amazon. Tried out the old momentums and liked except for the cups being a little small.

Sweet! I think you'll be happy.

I'm thinking about getting some open back headphones, but I'm concerned about sound leak because I stay up a lot later than my girlfriend and she sleeps about 20 away from where I would be using them. Is that enough distance to matter?
12-08-2015 , 12:49 AM
it depends how loud you listen to stuff + how light a sleeper she is. they do leak a lot.
12-08-2015 , 08:56 AM
She'll probably hear them...

I went ahead and bought the Sennheiser HD558 at Best Buy last night. They price matched Amazon's current $80 price, and I used Apple Pay with my Discover IT card for 22% cash back which will make them $68 total. I couldn't pass up that deal. I tested them out with her last night. Music definitely leaks a lot, but TV she couldn't really hear anything.
12-09-2015 , 03:29 AM
Sweet deal. How do you like them?
12-09-2015 , 08:25 PM
Absolutely loving them. I've never had a high end stereo system or headphones and I can tell I'm hearing a lot of the little details in my music collection for the first time. The sound is a lot more detailed and nuanced for sure.

If anyone is looking for amazing cans in the sub-$200 range, massdrop is selling the DT 1350 for $160 with free shipping. This has to be one of the best deals available for any pair of headphones on the internet

I joined another drop so I'm not part of this one, but if there's anyone out there that's thinking about the ATH-M50x, these headphones are 10x better for $10 more

The difference between lossless and spotify premium's 320kbps music suprised me, definitely way more noticeable than I thought it would be in everyday listening, made it a lot more enjoyable.
Followed your recommendation and noticed the difference immediately

you two must be the only users on tidal

Ordered my next pair of headphones... Klipsch x20i (just released at CES). Moving my x11's to backup duty.

Dual armature design with a KG-926T woofer is mated to a high-resolution KG-125B super tweeter.

I'm inexperienced with this whole amp required for a high end audio set up

What's the difference between this and the sennheisder hdvd 800 amp ?

This amp looks like a smart buy,
you can take it with you when you travel
and it sounds like w/the iphone 7's removal of the audio jack, as long as you have this guy, it won't affect you, correct?

I currently have the hifiman re-600 and plan to splurge on the sennheiser hd800 S later, I'm wondering if this oppo amp will be a good purchase for this?
01-22-2016 , 12:58 AM
Right now, the ess9018 (Oppo) chipset is really the top dog for chip based digital analog conversion for home or mobile. Burr brown is very good, but the sabre is better. The oppo is great for mobile audio, the hdvd is obviously better for home audio with its balanced audio connection.

If I had a hdvd, I would not use an oppo ha2 while at home, but I would on the road... though the oppo is high resolution.

For the entry price, you can not go wrong with the oppo. Its performance has to date been exemplary. While a apple phone might give you good sound, it cant compete with an external amp/dac combo like the ha-2 oppo.

by home audio you mean a real speaker set up?

Let's say you have the Sennheiser HD 800 headphones or something of that quality, are you going to notice a big difference between the Oppo ha2 and the sennheiser hdvd amp?
And if there is a noticeable difference, what is the minimum level of earbud/headphone quality needed to hear that difference?

Btw those klipsch earbuds you posted, that's a nice design

I my humble O, all equipment comes with sonic signatures that color or flavor the sound in different ways... everyone has their own preference. You need to try it to see if it fits your preferences.

I am not sure this question is quantifiable. Most any ear phone/bud will realize an increase in sound quality. The better your equipment, the better the results and noticability would be.

I wanted to ask.. what type of music do you listen to? The HD800's are, for the most part, at the top of the HP pile.

I am contemplating on getting another set of Beyerdynamics T5P... but I cannot seem to justify another set of mobilez right now.

I listen to a wide variety of music: Radiohead, electronic music (Not that steve aoki bull****), classical are some examples

I've never been a bass heavy kind of guy. Great bass is great but I don't need overcompensation.

I'm not too experienced with the high end audiophile stuff but my inclination is to listen to music the way the artist wanted it heard.

I love listening to music while playing poker, it feels really weird for me to be at the computer and not have something playing, so I feel like I should invest in some high quality gear that'll make me happy all day every day

This for example is awesome with the right equipment
https://youtu.be/kPWvpDm076o Radiohead - Reckoner, Live from the basement (for some reason I can't embed in this post)

Favorite electronic set
There's a lot going on in the background and it really adds to the experience with the proper gear

David Gilmoure just so awesome
