Uh, not sure how that answers my question, I was just wondering if there was a reason they were so cheap, like the build quality sucks or something.

If you're having to EQ headphones that much, they probably suck, that's probably the answer you're looking for.

Well, what is 'a lot'? On an 31-bands equalizer, you have quite small steps. The more precise you can be, the less overall impact one settings will have. Whereas if you have only 5-bands, any change will be major.

How are you arriving at those settings?
I noticed they were too forward myself, then luckily I was able to find a measurement someone had done with a Grado headphone (maybe the 225, don't remember exactly; which is fine for my purposes, because the series is very closely related). So I knew which areas to target, and tried it in steps, first -3db at the target areas (and less around it), then 5, then 7. At that point I was content.

I can adjust anything under 250hz purely by ear (goes for my main system as well), generated sweeps/tones can also help with that.

Interesting. Raw recordings typically need a lot of treatment (most of the time in mixing, unless you are working on very high end equipment, you are only using 6 bands of EQ, and often only 4 fully parametric bands, the other 2 are typically hi and lo pass filters, which aren't usually needed for music, or shelves which are), but finished recordings should rarely need that much treatment, even across a 31 band EQ. You've uncovered what I think is a major flaw in your headphones. Have you tried other headphones at the same settings to see what happens? Do you have a stereo or 5.1 system with subwoofer? If so, you should apply those same settings to your EQ and see what it sounds like in the room. You'd probably be pretty surprised at how much you've effed up the sound at those settings. In very few professional situations are you ever needing to do 7dB of cutting, in the frequency areas you have done that. Usually that is only necessary when something is very very poorly recorded. Chances are, the stuff you're listening to is not. From looking at your settings, again, it's a little hard to tell exactly how much impact it has on the sound. Did you try bypassing the settings (if possible), to see how much it's altered?

I would throw away any headphones that I needed to do that much EQ to make it sound flat (I'm not sure flat listening, meaning how the mixer intended it is your goal). You do realize, when listening in headphones, my goal is to listen flat when mixing, right? Mixing in headphones is exceptionally hard to do well, and if you can get headphones that you can understand, it's ideal. I have pretty good ones, though they are deficient for mixing bottom end (Shure SRH840). I want the headphones to sound good flat, and not by hyped anywhere (or underwhelming anywhere). I want to be able to realistically hear every frequency I need to hear, and to hear those frequencies relatively accurately (this includes balancing of levels). Stereo systems are a different animal, and you often need to EQ the speakers to get them to sound the way you want, as most people can't afford speakers that sound great, or even particularly good, flat. Same thing applies to car stereos, which is why most music mixers do car tests.

The driver in the left ear of my sennheiser 598 is blown and rattles like crazy. They are a little over a year old, so I emailed them and wrote on there fb trying to see about getting them serviced. Haven't heard anything from them in over a week :/ Pretty disappointed as I really like the products, but if they aren't going to last or give me service I won't be purchasing from them.

Hi I'd like a recommendation for a pair of closed ear headphones. I currently use senn HDR 180 and the sound quality is fine for my needs, but I live in a poker house with a grind room and the sound leakage is a major pain. I plan to use the headphones while traveling and playing live so durability is important.

My max budget is 250.

Sennheiser HD 598 (An excellent look to them as well with Burl Wood Accents)

$250 New on Amazon

If you can get to a place to listen to them, try the Shure SRH840. They will be less than $250.

Working in a computer lab that is running about 85db and looking for some over ear, noise canceling, highish-end headphones with iphone cabilities. I have a hard time with headphones, so also looking for the most comfortable. Willing to buy the Bose qc15's but no clue where they rank or if there are much better options.
03-31-2012 , 11:52 PM
If you can get to place where you can hear them, try the Shure SRH840 (they are not noise canceling headphones). They are pretty comfortable for long periods of time, and do a pretty good job getting above a lot of environments. 85dB is pretty hard to overcome though, and you could risk damaging your ears trying to get above that environment. They also probably won't need an amp with an iPod (not sure how close that is to an iPhone volume wise), as they seem pretty loud out of the box.

I had a wireless set from Jaybird a few generations ago. They worked pretty well if your intention if working out. The sound was mediocre, but I didn't buy them for that.

I broke them by flinging them off my head in frustration at something that wasn't there fault, so it's touch to really grade their durability.

Noise Cancel/Reduction

Durable

Sound Quality

He said over the ear headphones.

Gonna plug Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's for the millionth time. They're the most comfortable headphones I've ever owned, they sound awesome (especially if you like bass) and they last forever. I've had mine for 4 years and have traveled all over with them and they're still going strong.

Ok so I got the 150 refund coupon from Skull Candy no questions asked, thanks so much to the poster who advised.

anyone have a good recommendation for which headphones to plop that 150 on from SKs website?

The hifiman RE262, so far I'm really liking them a lot more the my ultimate ears 3 that I had previously. They can be worn over ear or straight down, sound really amazing, and are super comfortable. Only complaints would be that my iphone/ipod isn't quite powerful enough esp when compared to powering them through my laptop. Also make sure you burn them in for a couple days, the treble was a bit off at first but they sound great now. Might look into getting one of those small portable headphone amps to solve the ipod issue.

With those pads even Grado SR 325s would be comfortable.
