Agreed. I would be excited for that, or any HW matchup really.

Tough call here but I think the correct fight was a HW.

Jones isn't Conor, he's a known quantity (and that quantity is GOAT) so a loss at HW isn't catastrophic and a win basically makes him the anti-conor in the eyes of casuals.

Respect OSP for taking the fight, but they played this safe.

Was really excited about the possibility of Hunt, was fairly excited about any HW. Don't have much interest in this matchup..

so the guy that wouldn't fight Chael is going to take all comers at HW on short notice? I had zero hope of a HW fight despite the cool IG post.

If he fought a HW it would be the modern version of Mike Russow, whoever that would be now. Not anyone with a big huge punch. Mir would've made sense on a lot of levels if he hadn't just fought Hunt.

I guess Josh Barnett is kinda similar but Mir has more of a name, it's the whole champ v champ fight (how Vitor got his w/ Bones) and I think Mir is far less dangerous.

So they're feeding Jones an easy fight in which he should dominate and look extremely impressive and gets the interim belt at the same time. UFC 200 still doesn't have a co-main and Cormier is only out for a few weeks. Looks like champ vs interim-champ-who-recently-fought-and-dominated is a good way of filling that gap at 200.

Jones said in an interview not so long ago his plan was to move up but only to fight the smaller heavyweights and named Mark Hunt as one of the guys he wouldn't fight.

So I doubt there was any chance at all of him taking Hunt on short notice.

For everybody decrying this matchup, who do you think would be a better pick at LHW?

OSP is the only guy Jon hasn't yet fought outside of Rumble who's not an option, and that matters more to me than a tougher challenge against a guy who also has no chance (Bader, Glover, Rashad). Gus is the better alternative, imo, but he's coming of two losses; the most recent of which was a life shortening war with DC, so I'd prefer to give him more time to recover and regroup since he's the biggest challenge for Jon, IMO.

PokerRon,

DC is out until August/September.

Ah ok I thought I'd read something about 4-6 weeks. Wonder if Rumble will be ready by UFC 200?

Romero to be back in action sooner than expected, reached agreement with usada to shorten suspension.

That's a strange thing to say, was he just talking about his first fights at HW as an adjustment period?

There is something to be said for Jones being out for so long and getting a tune-up fight.

Eh it's not like he's been out with injury. I think thats where a lot of the ring rust from guys comes from. That fact that they're hardly training and mostly doing rehab, not to mention their injuries might leave them never the same.

Jones has been training hard and sparring this whole time, I think he'll be fine.

Yeah kind of, he said he would move up to heavyweight but only to fight the right opponent saying they would have to be one of the smaller heavyweights that are around 245lbs and it would have to be a super fight.

He then said guys like Hunt and Big Foot who weigh in 265lbs would be too big and if he was to fight them he'd have to put on a lot more muscle first which I got the impression that was something he wasn't interested in doing.

Greg Jackson tells @arielhelwani Jon Jones now has a full-time driver. Better late than never.

Seems pretty interested in it to me with all his crazy lifting videos.

The #1 and #2 guys are 236 and 240. Weird he'd be willing to fight him but not the bigger guys who are less good.

agree with this and it's been my same feeling

I'm not just looking to see Jones be tested and that's the be-all and end-all. I want to see him against someone new compared to those names sans Gus. Every single person has their own style, who knows what could happen?

Obv Jon by choke but who knows? Not that many were excited about Gus the first time around.

I wouldn't mind watch him fight Glover with Glover not getting his shoulder completely torn like 3 minutes into the first round.

I mean he got dominated, but he hit Jones more than anyone besides Gus/DC.

Daniel invited OSP to AKA to help him train and implement their gameplan. Jon's not impressed:

Heel Jones is kinda great.

That pic is hilarious and the syntax is spot on. Jones is right too, Cormier has a serious case of the passive aggressives.
