wat

efrain was boss for 155. i'm thinking of 3 pretty awesome finishes he was involved in (junie choke/cole ko/this last fight) and theres probably more in a division that lacks that. had to be outside issues.

Bummer, Belfort out with another injury. Nate is stepping in which makes sense. No word yet if the fight is still for a title shot.

Yawn. The middleweight division went from surprisingly interesting right back to boring as hell within a week.

Andrei Arlovski can finally rest easy again. Datsik turned himself into authorities in norway after being on the loose for several weeks. He did a newspaper interview saying he escaped b/c people persecuted him for his neo nazi beliefs. Was also quoted as saying "Im not a nationalist, just a racist". Its a shame this kid is bat **** crazy. He really could of made something of himself in mma.

hmmm

one rumor swirling around is that belfort is healthy and is actually stepping up for the immediate title shot at 125.

if true, that's cool

belfort laid up even longer makes me sad

Yea, i've heard this also. I'm curious as to what the opening line will be for Vitor/Anderson and especially Oakmi/Nate. Any guesses?

Confirmed via Dana White's twitter:

Vitor is not injured. He is going to fight anderson for the title and the winner of marquart and okami are next.

haha, oops. didnt refresh page.

i think nate opens a favorite. 3rd best standup in the division and decent enough wrestling/grappling skills. sort of like an upgraded rich franklin who okami had trouble against, while okami is kind of a downgraded chael who nate had trouble against, but i think if they fought again it could be different

i can look forward to vitor vs anderson speed vs speed.

Sonnen brought Okami in to be part of his training camp in the month leading up his fight with Marquardt. I do not know where Okami is training now, but if he is able to spend more time at Team Quest leading up to the fight Nate is going to be spending more time on his back.

So I just took a free class at a new gym. Should I automatically rule them out because they teach heel hooks to anyone off the street?
09-22-2010 , 09:24 PM
Were they teaching you heel hooks or was it more they were teaching other people and you were an observer? Are you sure they were heel hooks and not other footlocks? Were they rolling with heel hooks or just practicing them in drills?

I've never actually seen a gym teach heel hooks to complete noobs, much less allow them in beginner rolling. But personally I don't think it's a huge deal either way and there are far more important things to look at when judging the quality of the gym.
09-22-2010 , 09:42 PM
No I was in the class and we were doing a drill. Start in guard and pass into a heel hook? I'm not a complete noob but it seemed like they were teaching just anyone and I've seen you guys and other say you should wait atleast a year
09-22-2010 , 09:52 PM
meh I really have no problem with classes teaching heel hooks in drills as long as they also teach that they're dangerous, cause injury very easily, and probably shouldn't be used in rolling.
09-22-2010 , 10:12 PM
Elite drafting strategy by GSP. How could anyone not love this guy.
09-22-2010 , 10:17 PM
lol @ waiting a year to LEARN heel hooks. If they explain to you that they're dangerous and you're not to crank someone's knee when sparring or rolling, what's the problem? Why would you not learn a dangerous move in the beginning of your training? It's adding tools to your belt and making you a much more effective grappler. I learned heel hooks my first month and was super happy because I think it's a really interesting move. If you aren't a reckless moron you won't injure your training partners with it.

If it was a move where if you simply apply it wrong you ruin someone's knee, sure, wait. But unless you just crank the **** out of someone's leg while drilling a kneebar, you'll be fine.
09-22-2010 , 11:03 PM
The GSP drafting thing was great.

Those guys were both bad. That fight was as bad as some of the early TUF heavyweight fights.

I agree. I teach them to white belts in classes. i just really stress how dangerous they are. When i am rolling with some other decent guys if one of us catch it we just stop and then see if we can work out of it. We never try to crank til the tap just catch and release.

They are great moves and add alot to your game. Knowing you can throw heelhooks, toe hold, kneebar, messes up how other ppl roll against you.

I am heading up to bellator 30 on thursday. Three guys from the gym are fighting. Mike O'Donnell, Josh Clark, and Mike Fleniken. So root for them if you guys are watching the fights.

I'm actually worried about this happening. When it comes to Vitor/Franklin people tend to only talk about Vitor getting the KO but ignore that for the first 3 minutes of the fight Vitor barely engaged. Now if he was that cautious against Franklin how will he act when facing Anderson? On top of that Anderson rarely presses the action and normally waits for his opponent to attack and then does his damage. If both go in with the idea to counter the other this could be a very anticlimatic fight.

In tonight's TUF Lentz yelling "I got you buddy..." over to Bruce Lee after the 1st round was a classic karma moment.
