I agree with DO that Lesnar would be a slight favorite over Nog. If Lesnar ever commits to the jab then he will be a highly favored.

you forgot BJ Penn.

bj is ****ing awesome and my favorite fighter but he's not quite on their level in the striking department.

But he dominates standing up in his weight class as much as they ever did.

Plus he has sick ground skills. Man I ****ing love BJ Penn. GSP Penn rematch will be sick.

From the aired perspective, the ending strikes in the Lesnar match looked tame. But they look brutal here:

The guy in the red jacket is seemingly disgusted at the guy's kissing.

They showed that kid during the UFC event. He was at the fight, obv, since he's Lesnar's number 1 fan.

BJ Penn arguably has the best boxing in the UFC, if not MMA. Guys like Freddie Roach have come out to compliment him.

I think Lesnar is a favorite to beat Nog. Yes, I'm expecting some people to crucify me. But Nog's standup has looked fairly middling to poor in his last couple fights, and Lesnar's has been great. Nog nearly got KO'd by Herring, and then Sylvia worked him for 2.5 rounds until he pulled a classic Nog and got a submission from nowhere. Lesnar hits hard and has dropped everyone. I think Lesnar beats him standing and Nog is never able to pull it down to the ground.

Mikey, a note: To everyone talking about how Lesnar's standup is poor and he only is doing well because of his size, so what? Of course his size makes his striking better. It makes everything better! Yes, he KO'd randy with a glancing shot because he's huge. I don't care WHY his stand up is incredibly effective, but it is. Some people have awesome form and 20 years of background, he has 275 pounds of muscle. Whatever the reason behind it, Lesnar's standup is some of the most effective in the HW division, and he'd KO a lot of people with 'better' standup. Therefore, he has good standup. Yes, superman would be a BJJ god. Duh? If someone can submit anyone and noone can submit them, then that qualifies as being pretty damn good at BJJ. I don't care why they are that way. I feel like we're splitting hairs about the words 'technical', 'good', 'better'. Whatever you want to call it, his stand up is very effective.

Incidentally, Bob Sapp beat Nog like a ragdoll standing, mostly because he was huge. Does this mean that Nog will once again get ragdolled until he pulls a win out of his ass? Or does that fact that Lesnar can wrestle mean that just the part about Nog getting beat up applies?
I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree in regards to the differences between "good/great" and "effective." In my opinion, using your logic if Brock Lesnar beats Marcelo Garcia in a grappling match, Lesnar would have better jiu jitsu. That's just counter intuitive and, again in my opinion, wrong.

As for Lesnar/Nogueira, I think it's silly to point out the Herring high kick without also pointing out that Nog tore him apart standing for the other 13 minutes of the fight. Yes, he got picked apart by Sylvia, but that should be expected given Sylvia's skill level and size. I do think Brock will probably have an advantage based on his size, speed, and power, but I really don't think Nog's standup has looked "middling to poor" in his last two fights.

As for who's favored...I'm not sure. My gut instincts have Nog has a slight favorite. Frank Mir brought up a good point on MMA Live's post-fight coverage. As every bit as hard as it is to find guys to emulate Lesnar in the gym, it's just as hard to find guys Mir or Nogueira's size who have their level of jiu-jitsu acumen.

Brock looked impressive Saturday, but he wasn't perfect. Randy was able to get up twice relatively easily in the first round and had the ability to push him up on the cage at times. That isn't to say that Nog will have the same things in their fight, but I think it points out that Lesnar is still growing as a fighter, and has some holes to shore up.

Of the list of fighters i said i would take at +100 over Brock TODAY, Nog was by no means at the top of the list, Lesnar has some huge holes in his game but Nog isn't necessarily the guy to exploit them, with that said, offered +100 on this fight, if it happened tommorow, i would jump on it.

I also think we should clear up the difference between dropping someone and a KO, from what i have seen, a big hole Brock has in his standup is not the power he has but his defence and speed, if we see a heavyweight, who is has worldclass standup with good takedown defence we see a totally different Lesnar

GSP to get A Silva if he gets through Penn.

the UFC right now.

Thanks for the link cobra, that's one of the nastiest punches I've seen in MMA (or boxing, come to think of it).

It's all over the MMA media right now. There's a youtube video of a press conference Dana, BJ, and GSP did in Toronto where he says it.

I think BJ's going to beat GSP though.

yea, right after i posted i remembered reading the quotes

even more reason imo to root for penn, i dont know if i would want to see what anderson is going to do to gsp
11-18-2008 , 11:10 PM
if penn wins, then he fights at 155 vs florian? and then back at 170 vs thiago alves? i want penn to win just so he can fight more dudes at 170.

i'm gonna be sad if it goes to the 4th or 5th and penn gets tired though. i don't think for a second he'll come into the fight in bad shape, i just don't think he has the natural gas tank that some of these dudes have. i also hope he just weighs in at like 160.

In not one of those Gifs are any of the decent shots Randy landed, I thought Randy was starting to take over in round two... well even Dana said that and Brock nodded in agreement, so GTFO with this Brock dominated the fight 100% stuff, Randy did very well, but Brock is getting better every fight.
