I think he meant Penn there.

If Penn beats fitch, he gets a WW title shot. If anyone beats Fitch, they get a WW title shot. I thought that was obvious. The only reason Fitch doesn't get every second shot is that Zuffa doesn't want to listen to 45 minutes of booing during a title fight.

Ugh, not the weight class stuff with Assani again

Fitch is a LW, he's just too lazy to fight there.
Didn't you just get done calling someone else ******ed? Win over Fitch means title shot obv

EDF MMA chatroom been on fire lately, tons of good convo!

Against who though?

The winner of Penn/Fitch v. winner of Alves/Story?

That fight can't happen until like September in any event. Better to give Kos and Shields post GSP fights in the summer, and give Alves, Story, Condit, Dong, Lytle, Ellenberger, Kapmann, etc... a chance to hash it out, let two real contenders emerge and not have them fight until the end of the year. And since you're waiting all this time, give the winner of Penn/Fitch a winner in the interim too.

In Dec, have two top WW both of whom are 2-0 in 2011 fight it out for the vacant title.

That way you don't just put the title around some guy who lost to GSP six seconds ago and they at least have a shot at some credibility.

Oh ok, I thought Assani had taken you over for a second, lol.

I don't know if Penn is too lazy to rise back up the ranks of LW or if he just doesn't see it as a challenge. And when he doesn't view things as a challenge we get lacksadasical efforts like we saw in Edgar/Penn I. What LW contender isn't an enormous dog to BJ? He had nothing to gain by fighting the likes of Jim Miller, Evan Dunham, Clay Guida and George Sotiropolous. He'd be a at worst a 3:1 fave in every one of those fights. I think he knew moving up to WW would motivate him because it would challenge him and now he has fight where he's supposed to lose. When was the last time he was supposed to lose, GSP 2 years ago? I think we are going to see the best BJ Penn we've ever seen against Fitch.
02-15-2011 , 01:03 PM
Meh, I could be wrong of course, but I think if Penn had some super-Penn mode he only pulls out for special occasions we would have seen it for GSP-Penn 2.

Obv GSP>Fitch. Nonetheless, if there is a super-Penn, he would have shown at 94, and Fitch can beat the guy that GSP dominated that night.

I think GSP is so good that anybody at 170 or lower is going to look average against him these days. It's so hard to judge somebody's abilities against GSP, he's the most well rounded fighter to date. I don't see Fitch taking Penn down as easily as GSP did and GSP's standup isn't even on the level of Penn so we will see. Either way I pumped for this fight just unfortunate I may not be able to see it because paying $55 twice in a month for a PPV is a bit much.

I'd normally laugh at this, but super-Penn destroyed Diego. He had a six-pack and everything. When I saw him walking down the aisle for Edgar 1 with sunken eyes and a belly, I told the folks I was with he just didn't look the same.

You do realize countless bars show UFCs?

Yea but who goes to a bar and doesn't spend at least $55? Times are hard when you become incredibly lazy at your profession and don't make money for months at a time and then get a stake so all the money you have isn't even yours, lol.

that place is ~20 minutes from my house. There are places closer, but that one looks like the best to me so far. I'd probably be interested in one grappling(BJJ) and one striking(muy thai?) to start out, and I'd definitely want to compete in the future if I got good enough(meaning I would want to do no-gi ju jutsu since its more practical for actual fighting).

In general, I'd be very interested in hearing anyone with MMA experience give some pointers to people looking to start out.

edit: One specific question...I'm fairly athletic(190 lbs and had a 1200+ total max on bench/deadlift/squat as recently as 2 months ago), and I fear that if I get put into a beginner class that I may not learn technique as quickly as I should because I'll be able to beat other beginners simply due to being a better athlete. Is this a legit concern or will I have plenty of opportunities to get my ass kicked by more experienced guys, which will force me to improve my technique.
Why do you want to get in to MMA at age 28? You will always get your ass kicked no matter how crappy the promotion. You are too old to start with zero combat art experience. Grappling competitions are the way to go for you to get your fight fix. Start training bjj with a gi. Do this for at least a year and then you can expand to no-gi grappling. You will be a much better grappler if you start with a gi. Las Vegas has a ton of great places to train bjj. The good places offer both gi and no-gi classes. Most places offer at least one free introductory session. check out a few gyms that are convenient for you and then choose the one with the best energy for you. Look to make sure the instructor who teaches most of the classes is a black belt. Sometimes a black belt with a good name will open a gym and then delegate most of the teaching to purple or brown belts. Don't train at a place like this. For the striking, do boxing or Muey Thai. Preferably Muey Thai.

Yea, I don't see how you save money by going to a bar vs ordering and watching at home, it just depends which experience you enjoy more.

Just watch it illegally.

Um, he didn't say he was going pro...

I live in NYC I don't drink beer I have a girl who would go with me, who also doesn't drink beer so drinks will be $8 a pop + a cab to get home. 3 drinks each with a tip for each round is about $60 then $10 for a cab, at minimum it's $70. Life in the big city is expensive. Or I could just win a bunch of money over the next week and have no worries and just order the fight at home and drink to my heart's content as BJ Penn bashes Jon Fitch's face in (hopefully).

He's only -300 because he's supposedly good. Or was, like 4 years ago. It's incredible how far past endeavours can carry your reputation in MMA.
Nah, I mean Barnett could lose, but his style is so tailor made to beat a guy like Rogers. At least Fedor stood and traded with him, which is Rogers strong suit. Barnett is gonna take him down and do whatever he wants, but he might not finish him quick like people expect.

Do you and your girl need to drink booze? Why not just get a couple burgers/other inexpensive items and a pop. Then you can drive too.

Then that would cost like 5k to see the fight since I don't own a car, lol.

Rogers is done. He looked legitimately scared when he fought Overeem. Barnett takes this one easily.

let's do some Fedor style UFCFAN analysis of Brett "the gimp" Rogers.
1. He has no quality wins.
2. He beat Arlovski which is worse than a loss.
3. He lost to Overeem who LOST TO CHUCK LOLDELL.
4. He lost to LOLMELIANENKO who lost to the bad "A. Silva"

He makes Tim "the mangy-yak" Sylvia look like a beast.

Apparently Fedor is competing in the world sambo champs 10 days from now.

Guess having clear vision out of both eyes isn't necessary for Sambo.
