Health insurance is pretty easy to get these days in the US in terms of getting covered for small stuff like a broken arm or w/e. You can pretty much get it for free if you work the system a little bit. I'd certainly do a little research.
lol please explain how to work the system a little bit and get free health insurance.

also...

Dear diary,

I ippon seoi nage'd some new guy with a mohawk today and nearly killed him. Then proceeded to hit him with a side mount opposite side armbar while he was still trying to get his wind back.

I'm the baddest man alive.

Well I live in southern california and pretty much every broke mexican I know gets free medicaid. You just have to find out what qualifies you for it and then put that on a form and boom you are good to go. Pretty much any broke person over 18-28 qualifies.

Also if you're under 26 if you are in type of school you can insurance through your parents for pretty much free.

If you have a job that doesn't just give you insurance I'm pretty sure you can buy in for pretty cheap.

I'm probably talking nonsense. Just making an observation based on little evidence from what I've seen. Figured I'd throw it out there though that if you try its possible to get cheap/free health insurance.

They recently changed this in WA to where you can get it through your parents regardless of being a student. You can also be married and still be covered. This is what's going to cover me.

I guess they call it Friday Night Fights for a reason.

I want to get into it but I have no Health Insurance
I can't think of too many people I know who have trained a long time (3+ years) and haven't had an injury. BJJ is great and I don't want to dissuade you from checking it out but it's a rough sport and you should definitely have medical coverage before starting.

Yea. It also depends on what you consider a bad injury. Tweaked ankles or bruised ribs are gonna happen. Torn ACL or a broken bone can happen as well and yea you'll need insurance... but then again these can happen with any sport.

Before everyone in EDF MMA started talking about training, I always assumed training BJJ was pretty safe. There's no strikes and it doesn't seem rough. Obviously in competitions the tempo is very high so it's more dangerous.

The idea that training BJJ could chip my tooth, rupture my eardrum or wreck my knee seemed quite unlikely to me.

Do people go pretty hard in sparring or what?

It is "pretty safe" in the sense that in a controlled environment it's not some death trap where you're just asking to get hurt. But being tangled up with another person while rolling around screams potential injury. There are so many windows for accidental injury when you're wrestling with someone that people don't realize. Even having someone above your weight laying on you while you're trying to wiggle around and climb out is going to leave your body sore and slow you down for a bit after. Imagine one of the many different ways someone can land on you and there are instantly dozens of potential injuries to happen. Add in the fact that you're obviously moving around in positions the body isn't really used to going and you magnify the potential for injury.

We roll pretty controlled when we spar, but people definitely don't half ass it. I don't know what you think is "hard", but people don't slam each other and **** in grappling really. We're actively trying to sub each other and sweep/reverse/control one another, but that's what grappling is. If you watch ADCC, people are going "hard" but it looks gentle because that's kind of how grappling looks.
