2008 Music Thread -- Vol. II 2008 Music Thread -- Vol. II

I was gonna post this in the OOT: Hardcore and Metal thread but its full of weird goths. I'd just like to say that Have Heart - Songs to scream at the Sun, is the best hardcore album ever or at least of 2008.

i havent seen it mentioned yet, so i apologize if this is a repeat suggestion

BUT

anthony green's solo project "avalon" is definitely my favorite cd of 2008

he was lead singer of saosin/circa survive, neither of which i particularly cared for, but this is vvvvgood

also going to see of montreal tomorrow night, saw conor oberst a few weeks ago which was epic, and really really loved the tvotr show about 6 weeks ago

I've been listening to some chill hip hop lately (none of this t-pain gold teeth garbage), and I've been very impressed with:

The Knux - Remind me In 3 Days

and

Q-Tip - The Renaissance

HOLY F**KING SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!

WTF THIS BAND IS SO AWESOME ARE YOU SERIOUS

ZOMGWTFLOLBBQHYACHAYCHAYCHACHYA

I've just discovered The Sunshine Underground. 2 years late because I'm American and lame. British rock band in the vein of Oasis, Primal Scream, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, but the sound is a bit more... it's hard to describe but there's something ethereally sexy and cool as sh*t about it; both the production and the songwriting.

Apologies if someone has already mentioned them here in this thread; I've tried to listen to most of the recommendations and read all the posts, but if I missed someone praising this amazing kick-ass band, sorry.

But if this is the first mention of them -- come on people what are you waiting for.

They released an album in 2006, but the MySpace page I linked to has new songs from a record that will likely come out early 2009.

The new demos were produced and debuted in November, so I can't be too late on discovering these.

Yeah, theyve got some really good songs. For some reason though they didnt really get that popular here in the UK.

Saw MGMT last night, they were pretty fun. Did some stuff from when they were The Management which nobody really got into but stuff from Oracular was great

For some reason, about this time every year (3rd in a row anyway) I feel the urge to start listening to Sufjan Stevens - Illinois again. Its still awesome.

It got me thinking about previous top 10 lists... and how my music tastes have changed etc. I can't find my 2005 list, I know I made one and that CD was at/near the top.

2006 (no rap)
1. Band of Horses - Everything All the Time
2. Hot Chip - The Warning
3. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
4. Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming
5. The Thermals - Body, the Blood, the Machine
6. TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
7. Decembrists, The - The Crane Wife
8. Califone - Roots and Crowns
9. The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls In America
10. Subtle - For Hero: For Fool

For some reason I found it necessary to make two separate lists in '06, one for rap, one for everything else. I think I've listened to every CD on the non-rap list at least once in the last few months, which is kind of surprising to me. If I were to redo it now I think Neko and The Thermals would be 1-2 and BOH would drop down to 7 probably.

2007:
1. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
2. LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
3. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
4. Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
5. M.I.A. - Kala
6. Radiohead - In Rainbows
7. Okkervil River - Stage Names, The
8. Beirut - The Flying Club Cup
9. National, The - Boxer
10. Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala

Still like this list too. I might move Lekman up to 6 and replace Radiohead completely if I were to redo it now though. In Rainbows really didn't hold my attention for very long.

Btw I'm not sure if it came from this thread or from Dom's thread, but kudo's so far to whomever recommended The Ting Tings, Porcupine Tree, The Avalanches. (Or more to the point, That's Not My Name, Trains, Frontier Psychiatrist. I'm more into songs than bands I think.)

Between those two threads and some other threads and other sources, I downloaded 3k new songs (legally of course). I've got the songs on random on my ipod in my car. It will probably takes years to listen to all of them.
12-11-2008 , 05:44 PM
I don't think I recommended the Avalanches, but Frontier Psychiatrist and Since I Left You in general.

+1

When I first started listening to this album, I really loved Frontier Psychiatrist, but now I really like the whole album.

I kinda dig some of the stuff The Avalanches did early on. Or at least, it reminds me of high school.

Run DNA
Rock City (excuse the terrible fan vid)

Re: Frontier Psychiatrist, I always assumed it was a universal trend to love it the first 15 or so listens, then hate it after that. But that might just be because it was played so relentlessly in Australia when it was released...

I've been listening to Amadou & Mariam's Welcome to Mali the last few days. Wow, it's pretty sick. It's mostly African but it's like a musical hit of ecstasy -- some of the catchiest stuff I've heard in awhile. I've been searching for a weak spot but there aren't any in the album's 64 minutes.

Then I was reading on wiki:

Quote:
Amadou and Mariam are a musical duo from Mali, composed of the couple Mariam Doumbia (vocals) (born in Mali's capital Bamako 15 April 1958) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals) (born in Bamako 24 October 1954). The pair, known as "the blind couple from Mali" met at Mali's Institute for the Young Blind, and found they shared an interest in music.
... utterly the opposite of who I imagined composed the group.

Youtube sucks. Can't find hardly anything.

Here's their single, "Mali," which I like a lot. The rest of the album is much more rocking and uptempo though.

Anyway, check 'em out. It's kinda like Cut Copy mixed with Vampire Weekend and a little TVOTR. (Edit: And Lil Ze from City of God, imo.)

Might start hangin around this thread as I always used to have broad music tastes but have let myself slip dramatically recently and need to get back into some good new stuff.

Gonna try some Sigur Ros and this Of Montreal you all keep talking about.

Also, how comes no love for Death Magnetic in any of these year end lists? I thought the album was awesome. Definitely the best Metallica album in 15 or so years and sometimes we all need to just blast some Metallica out every now and then.

Not sure I can pump out a top ten list as I dont really have ten albums this year I really like a lot but I know my top album would be third by Portishead. I'd never listened to Portishead before but listened to a friends copy and loved it.

I haven't listened to Welcome to Mali yet, but their last CD Dimanche a Bamako is really good too.

Thanks a lot, I'll check it out.

Amadou and Mariam sound great listening to their myspace. Will defo get the album!

Looks like Damon Albarn is still stuck on his Africa kick, producing a couple of their songs including the single.

I'm half-way through this album and I REALLY dig it so far. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also, you guys should definitely check out Shugo Tokumaru.
