Just got out of the Cut Copy show in Austin. ****ing incredible. Like omgwtfbbq gogogogogogo see them. Best thing you'll do for yourself all year.

Different music, but I'm looking forward to the Chase & Status album. Eastern Jam's one of my favourite tracks at the moment:

There isn't much D&B here so far, so here's Hazard - Machete:

Oh, and while I'm posting youtube dubstep:

D&B is pretty different from most the bands in this thread, so here's another Chase & Status track with some genre crossover:

Or perhaps Pendulum - Propane Nightmares:

Murs - Murs for President

Heard just a bit, the single is called "Me and This Jawn", sounds good.

I know its already been talked about, but TVOTR Dear Science is quickly becoming my favorite album of the year. It has definitely been dominating my listening as of late.

Got into The Duke Spirit after checking out this thread. Went to see them in London last night. ****ing excellent.

Anyone else have a chance to listen to the new Parenthetical Girls album (Entanglements). It's really good IMO.
10-02-2008 , 11:18 AM
The new Los Campesinos! We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed is disappointing. It's still got that same quirkiness as Hold On Now, Youngster but their sound has evolved and though I can't quite put my finger on what is different I know I don't like it. Nothing comes even close to You! Me! Dancing! and other HONY highlights, and overall the album is quite average. If HONY was an 8/10 this is probably a 5. The band say that this isn't just a collection of B-Sides and other songs not good enough to be on HONY but that's exactly what it sounds like. Maybe repeated listens will change my mind but I doubt it.

Edit: Also the cover art is terrible.
10-02-2008 , 11:11 PM
Yeah i agree. Their lyrics about teenage angst (in a kinda positive way) were kinda fun on HONY simply because their really exciting and fast, but not heavy, sound really brought it together. Now they still have the same kind of sound, but nothing catches my ear, and it just doesnt' come together in harmony. Then you start listening to what the lyrics are talking about and you feel like you need to be 13 to appreciate this album when these things seemed to be the most important thing in the world.

ive been really into this Plants and animals: Parc Avenue cd. highly suggest checking it out.

I listened to the Vivian Girls album a couple of days ago and had no opinion on it. Today pitchfork said it was great or whatever (8.5), and I'm listening to it now and all it sounds like to me is lo-fi rock. Like...an all-girl Guided by Voices (but less catchy)

I don't know. Totally average and meh for me so far. I can't discern one song from another except for Where Do You Run To, which gets props for being a little different from all the other songs.

Does anybody else have an opinion on this one?

I saw My Morning Jacket last night at the Orpheum Theatre last night. It was, predictably, an amazing show. The only downside was that they played Highly Suspicious as the third song of their encore. They followed it up with Anytime and One Big Holiday though, so it was ok.

It was also a much different venue then any of the other times I've seen them. The first was in 2003 (I think) at the Ascot room in the Quest.

This is some other band playing there, not a great photo but its the best I could find and gets the point across. It is the secondary stage/room at a relatively small club. I'd guess there was probably 50 people there that night. It was awesome.

The next time I saw them was at the main stage at the Quest.

A little bigger, probably a couple hundred people. This was on their "Z" album tour. It was a good show but easily the weakest of the 4 that I've seen... probably a combination of it being an album tour for their first really popular album, a new(ish) lineup and me wanting to hear more of their older songs, not just everything off Z.

The next time was at Lollapalooza in 2006. It was easily my favorite show of the festival even though they were one of the only bands I saw that weekend who I'd seen before. They were also one of the most popular "daytime" shows of the weekend. I skipped (or listened from a distance anyway) Iron and Wine to get a good spot and it was definitely worth it. Video from that performance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLyOTpa-fJ4

The guy who filmed that video must have been standing very near me.

During that show Jim James told a really cool story about how he went to the very first Lollapalooza in '91 and absolutely loved it. He said that on the way home all he could think about was how much fun it would be to one day play at Lollapalooza and that as it turned out, it was even more fun then he'd imagined. Or something like that.

This is the Orpheum:

My Morning Jacket was one of the bands that I started listening to when I got to college in 2001 and finally came to the conclusion that there existed music, other than traditional rock and rap, that was worth my while. Seeing them again made me think about how they played a big role in putting me on a path to having much broader (and imo, better) musical tastes. And also that I've kind of been able to watch them grow up as a band. And how cool it is that I still like them every bit as much now as I did in 2002.

If you have a chance to see them and haven't, definitely do it. They are one of the best live bands I've seen... and I've seen a ton.

Sorry for literally copy/pasting a blog post.

*sigh*

I'm just trying to hold EDF to a bit higher standards than one-line posts like Berky's that are basically epic fails in light of the other posts I quoted.

So you do or don't like the new kings of leon? Stop being so cryptic.

sorry about my epic fails.

In other news Ill Bill's new album "The hour of reprisal" is ****ign sick.

I think the new kings albums is a few songs short of being a masterpiece. The start and the end are great, but a few songs in the middle are pretty mundane. One of my fav albums of the year.

There's also one in LA, and I think SF. Yep, there's a crapload of them out there:

http://www.google.com/search?q=orphe...C_enUS244US245

When I did comedy my closing line was "If you liked what you saw here tonight, you can catch me at the Orpheum Theater, starring in a one-man, all-nude, silent dance interpretation of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. (I have red hair) So get your tickets early, they're going fast."

I didn't realize I could legitimately use Orpheum in so many towns.

Went to see Beck last night at United Palace Theatre in NYC, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. He totally phoned it in, lacking emotion and truncating many songs (e.g. he left out the bridge in Lost Cause).

On the other hand, MGMT opened for him. I wasn't really familiar with them beforehand, but they blew me away. Great energy, not an entirely original sound but every song still had a unique feel. One of the few concerts I've been to where the entire venue was in their seats for the opening act.

This Marnie Stern album is pretty damn cool. Only a few listens in, so no final verdict, but it's certainly a trip. Frenetic.
