How's my Johnny Cash? How's my Johnny Cash?

05-23-2008 , 03:41 AM
I play in a kickass rock'n'f'ing'roll band with SammyKid, and I do a few Cash tunes at every gig. It generally goes over really well. I'm trying to put together some kind of standalone show that I could do at Club Med, cruise ships, Armed Forces Entertainment, or other cheezy, cushy gigs.

I threw this together the other morning, and will likely do a few other tunes and make a nice little promo package to send out. I want to get a wide variety of input on it, and I figure 2+2 is a good place for that. So, what do you think?

Folsom Prison

LOL

*feel free to move to OOT or BBV if this is less appropriate than 'rate my daughter'

I love Johnny's Sun sound, but something didn't sound right. I think you need a little more soul in your delivery. Johnny seemed to me to stress some words, like the b's in "blow my blues away," and the f's in "far from Folsom Prison," and "fancy dining car." He sort of shouts out "railroad."
Your Johnny is better than average, but you need work on your Luther Perkins.
The drummer's tempo on Folsom Prison Blues was a tad fast and the guitar was more rock and roll than rockabilly, if that makes any sense.

I appreciate the song and it seems like you really like Cash. I am not a fan of Rockabilly and that is what it sounds like to me...
Effort: A+
Delivery: C (-)

That sounded nothing like the real Ring of Fire.

Thanks. Walk the Line is good if the crowd is into the Cash stuff, otherwise I stick to Folsom, Cocaine Blues, Ring of Fire... stuff people ought to know. I rarely do Boy Named Sue because country rap kinda drives me crazy. One Piece at a Time is in the same category.

Well, they were both produced by Sam Phillips at Sun. Everything from that studio, and from every other studio within the next few years, sounded like Elvis.

Wait so he doesn't sound exactly like the Johnny Cash recording? Mind blowing stuff imo.

Eh, I didn't really take issue with anything said there. I did throw this whole track down in about 2 hours at like 10am, but any input is appreciated. The guitar took the longest, but then guitar isn't my primary instrument.

I'll post Cocaine Blues when I get around to it. That one's always fun. Should I do it straight-ahead, or add some flare to it?
