No, they don't. They do micromanage their resources with mathematical precision for the most part, though, and that can count for something. They can almost even that out though by not knowing what to build and just trying to build everything.

Lava and 2 Hills, they can be good at. But that's partly because the default is that they get the much better side of the map.

Eventually I'll get back to the point where I can take on three of them at a time, but for now, I'm still at the sucky stage.

Did you go and get many good third party maps? Some of the old favorites are gone forever, but luckily a number are still out there, though you have to do a bit of searching.

I say this a lot, but I think a big issue with annoyingly long cut-scenes/dialogue might be the fact that voices are now actually voiced. When you had to read a lot of dialogue in old RPGs or adventure games it was not so bad, because you're still engaged when you're reading as opposed to sitting there like a moron for 5 minutes listening to them speak. This can possibly be counteracted in games with stellar voice acting such as Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, but that's the only game I can remember playing that has legit great acting.

In general I really feel it's something game designers need to adjust for and that there should be less dialogue in a game today than there would have been if the game was made without voice acting.

Blarg, with the expansion.. They recently gave me mavericks and pelicans.

Those are a deadly combo and they build so fast. I haven't figured out the complete usefulness yet, because it was on a lush map with tons of trees. I raped any planes, I took out the heavy laser towers from a distance, etc.

One use is like you use slashers. Get LOS and then back off. Your laser won't fire, but your missile still will. So you can sometimes get in lots of shots without taking any.

Mavericks are very powerful but not all that well armored, IIRC. Really nice behind enemy lines. Left unmolested for not very long, they can do some major damage quickly, or take out a commander. And they're simply great fun to use.

didnt wanna make a new thread for this.

i found this game on playstation store: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/...r-psp-and-ps3/

now, i remember having a game that used a very similar concept but in 2D on a desktop we had about 13-15 years ago (i have no idea which model) and have always wanted to download it again for old times sake. Does anyone know what the name of this game was? i know its kind of vague but i really cant remember much else about it. Also before anyone says, the game im thinking of is not Qix, but very similar.

Yeah, I got put on some another lush map, but they put just enough water in it, so you HAVE to use hovertanks and pelicans. Airplanes are basically out of the question because they have like 4 gazillion flak guns. It's really frustrating because, let's be honest.

Their main defense is: 12 floating laser turrents (not enough water to build boats), behind that on a hill is 4 guardians(core equivalent), doomsday machine and a boat load flak guns. So, you have guardian and doomsday machines pounding on you the second you step out of your base. So, I basically played defense until I was able to get a bertha up? And then it's just zerg peepers in until the guardians/doomsdays are down. But I mean, that's so rough to force you to use hovertanks and pelicans only.

Yeah that's why I don't tend to like campaigns much. They give you one and only one solution too often, when in a regular skirmish or against a live player you would have so many more choices and would be rewarded instead of punished for creative thinking. I did play the full TA campaigns through though. They're better than most IMO.

Have you ever tried hawk dancing? I got through so many of those campaigns with hawk dancing.

Yeah, that's my usual go to move, in the earlier ones, but they have so many flak guns, you need like 20+ hawks to survive it.

I just kind of hate wasting resources like that, when I know I can build a bertha and and get the army ready at same time.

I just realized that pretty much every PC game I own/play is a sequel.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Diablo 2
Starcraft 2
Counter-Strike Source
Far Cry 2
Dirt 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Battlefield Bad Company 2

Kinda sad but that's the way the industry has been going for quite a while. I kinda miss the old wild wild west days.

Somehow, I missed this part of your post. What are the old favorites? I found a site that has a ton of maps and some older packs.. You remember any of the names? The version I downloaded(Of TA) came with both expansions, the cavedog new units, and a few other things, 5k unit patch, 3.1 patch.. uh... and a ton of maps.

There are a lot of places, but a lot of dead links out there too. Try these:

TA by Poos

Great Divide 2, Gnugs of War, and TA Micromachines here. The last one is really fun, TA laid out like a board game. Very creative.

Ratpacker

TONS of good maps here, but not every link works. Great "old standards" maps like Craters, Jango, Delta Class Fortresses, Metal Isles, Metal Heck 2, LandAirSea, Real Earth, Annihilator Alley, Gatorlands (very fun), Mesopotania, Mounds of Mars, The Sewer,

D-Gun

Battle Tactics maps

TA Zone

Some map packs, the top one has some standards like John's Pond and Beta Tropics

There are other classics like Deep Space Array that are hard to find, but worth seeking out.

--------
Oh, and here's a cool page showing whether wind and tides are a good idea.

TAuniverse.com is also good for forums.

And if you haven't watched any TADRS (replayed games), you're in for a treat if you go to TADRS. You'll need the replayer, if you don't have it already. Tons of dead links, but you can still find dozens of fun and instructive games to watch there.

Hahaha I remember having this problem every time I've tried to start the game. To this day I have not played it for more than a few minutes.

I think you need to read the manual, hopefully you have a PDF copy or whatever. IIRC it tells you exactly what to do to start off, step by step, and then once you're up and running you should be fine on your own. I've never gotten to that point of course, but it seems reasonable.

Equip your guys with weapons. Throw a smoke grenade to start so you don't all get grenaded or shot as soon as you leave the plane. Walk out and cover all directions like a swat team. Shoot them before they shoot you.

Research lasers for better weapons. Keep making them and sell the extras for cash. Make medical kits and use them on your guys when they're shot. Make uniforms so sometimes they can take a shot and still live.

Refine from there. There are lots of guides on the net.

Well worth learning; it's one of the best games ever made.
