I have an xbox360 and I'm not really going to buy blu ray equipment (or a ps3) in the future (because, amongst other things, I can't install a nice sound system where I live). I understand that most xbox titles are 720p anyway and are upscaled to 1080p. Is the xbox touching the top of its capabilities anyway so that there won't be 1080p titles in the future that make a difference? Should I go for the extra size or for the full-hd with the smaller screen to be ready for future developments?
I can't afford a 37" full-hd and anything bigger than 37" will look stupid in my room and take away too much space.
The issue of screen size vs resolution is
entirely one of how far away from the screen you'll typically sit.
In the first case, it is simply a mathematics issue - are you close enough to the screen to even see the improvement from 1080p to 720p? The second factor is the size of the screen.
The calculations have been done and are available here:

Another issue is one of content - do you have 1080p content? By the sounds of things, you do not.
Finally, as a general comment, you need to sit pretty bloody close (almost using it as close as you would be to a PC monitor) to get any benefit out of 1080p on a 32" screen. Your eyes simply aren't good enough to see the improvement from 720p to 1080p beyond a metre or two on a 32" screen.
