Shouldn't be ok at E3 either. The world has moved on.

Especially if you want video games to be taken more seriously.

i mean, i get that it's a good look if you're still marketing pics of HAWT CHICKS at your booths or after-parties to 14 year old boys, or men with the emotional maturity of 14 year old boys, but yeah, everyone else is just kind of embarrassed when stuff like this happens

Zany "Insomnia" sale going on at GOG.com right now - basically they put a limited number of copies up for a game and once they sell out change to something else (pretty sure games repeat). Most games probably last for a minute or less, so a lot of turnover but on the flip side you need to be quick if something pops up. Haven't seen anything amazing, Crypt of the Necrodancer at $4.99 maybe the best so far.

Are there any good quiz-games these days? I used to play a lot of Buzz! on the ps3 (pretty much bought all that came out) but after the last one (world quiz?) both that series and quiz-games in general seemed to just die? (I guess that movie-based one on xbox stuck around for a bit after that too).

What up with that? I thought they were pretty popular? Are there any substitutes for such games today?

All the consoles have versions of Trivial Pursuit I believe.

Thanks

I should've specified I'm looking for online games. I did pick up one of the 'you don't know Jack's while back but it's local multiplayer only (and also rather weird...).

I don't have many nearby friends who like to play games and when we do, Buzz! still works locally (they shut down their servers a couple of years back so no online anymore).

Ubisofts Trivial Pursuit Live looks pretty good, but for consoles I've just got a ps3 (which a review said online was useless for TPL) and a Wii U which doesn't have it. I'll give it a try if I can pick it up cheaply sometime though.

I've been trying to beat the original Baldur's Gate which I have on cds, but I don't think I can make it. I know BG2 is far superior experience, but I was **** at BG1 back in the day so never really progressed further than even Nashkel and I wanted to finally beat it before replaying BG2 (in BG2 back in the day I also got around halfway through). Turns out I'm apparently still ****. The game is bloody hard, especially at the start where many mobs one or two hit my folks. Plus there's so much walking and there are so many open empty areas and it's all clunky and a bit annoying that I don't think I can survive this agony. Which is sad really. Also the UI is quite meh.

There are not many people on the internet complaining about BG1 so I feel a bit alone in this and guilty for not having strength to get through it.

On the other hand on my stationary computer I've been playing Dragon Age: Origins and despite quitting it a few times over too much micromanaging I got hooked up again and now I believe this game is simply excellent. I love pretty much everything about it, and the micromanagement is not bad if you know what to do and know which skills are truly valuable. It's been a while since I played an RPG so vigorously.

Re: BG1 - Your warriors can melee early on, everyone else should stick to ranged. Thieves are a bit useless in combat until they get some HP and enchanted armour.

Annoyingly I rolled a neutral evil rogue, but he can bow it out. I also replaced Imoen with Garrick - I should have probably bid Xian goodbye instead. Maybe I can change it if she's still standing in the spot I left her in Belegost. My only warriors then are Khalid and Montaron who's halfthief - so he's not so durable. I'll try to play with it a bit. I think leaving Xian would also prompt Montaron to leave though, sigh.

I hate that I can't freely search for sidequests as my companions rush me to Nashkel.

Garrick is the bard, right? Statistically awful character. Imoen is solid if you dual her to a mage.

Can't recall exactly but I don't think any NPCs will leave the party if you don't rush Nashkel, despite all the complaining. There are instances where NPCS will leave if you don't get a move on with their quests.

Montaron and Xzar will leave the party if you don't go to Nashkel quickly enough.
Jaheira and Khalid will leave the party if you don't go to Nashkel quickly enougn.
Minsc will leave the party if you don't rescue Dynaheir quickly enough.
Sam will die if you don't go to the Friendly Arm Inn quickly enough.

I vaguely remember experiencing something similar ~10 years ago in my playthrough with Xzar and Montaron.

Garrick is the bard indeed, I thought it's wise to get him for the song, but I'll bring Imoen back.

I spent a couple hours modding my BG games on GOG last year but when I finally started up the first game the scale of it felt way too daunting and I haven't picked it up since. My tolerance for playing games with any amount of tedium is rapidly disappearing, and I'm sure you feel the same way having a family. A few days ago I tried out my PS+ version of Grim Fandango, which I know is a classic, but I couldn't get past all the long walking segments trying to find random objects to click on to progress my quests.

Interestingly, since you mention DA: Origins, I've actually been playing the hell out of Inquisition lately, which takes a lot of the best parts of Origins but adds more action and more intuitive systems in general (except for maybe crafting - also the combat is a little less strategic if I remember correctly). All the areas are packed with side quests so you're constantly completing objectives, which make you more powerful and allow you to find more areas and quests to complete - it's like someone took clicker-game style feedback and implemented into a fully featured RPG. Highly recommended.

Mash, fantastic self-deprecating post up there about how you're such scum for not having the strength and ability to play through BG1. I hope you don't mean it though. :'(

I'll give it a couple more shots, I play it in 1-2 hour evening sessions in bed on a laptop so it'll be probably at least another week

The list of classic games that I've been unable to finish (or even remotely get into) over the last couple of years is a cause of great shame for me...until I realize I have thousands of hours of backlogs and perpetual games to get back to. Gaming time is precious, can't be wasting it on things you don't enjoy just because you feel obligated to play through them.

For those of you that still play your 360 or use the controllers, several retailers (Best Buy and Amazon, to name 2) have Nyko dual controller chargers with 2 rechargeable batteries included on sale for ~$15. Consensus seems to be that these are very good and that this is a great price; looks like they make be getting cleared out. I had switched to rechargeable AAs since my charge and play set died after 7 odd years but this seemed like a nice thing to have if I'm going to keep my controllers around to use on my computer.

Does anyone else insist on buying GOTY versions of games and then rarely if ever play the DLC? Picked up FO: New Vegas after letting it sit for a few months and decided to play Old World Blues as I wasn't really feeling any of my other quests; if you own it but haven't played it, I highly recommend it. Totally reinvigorated my enjoyment of the game, which I initially liked less than FO 3 or Skyrim. Some of the funniest writing I've seen in a game plus it adds a few new items to your repertoire. It's pretty challenging though so don't forget to bring a bunch of stimpacks - I'm getting close to the end of the main quest line and dangerously close to running out.

Good to know!

Yea I did that with Fallout 3, kinda knowing I might not play the DLC. I tried one of them a little bit, but the PS3 version is too buggy (frequent full lock-ups) so I only did a few minutes basically.

Actually I think I may have almost-unknowingly finished one of them, the one that extends the main quest.
