So it's in closed beta atm, and my friend is in the closed beta and this game looks like it could be pretty decent. Who else will be hitting this hard from the start when it comes out in a month or 2?

Dark Age of Camelot was the best MMORPG ever from 2001-2003. Hoping Mythic learned from its mistakes and with EA backing them it'll be something special and worth destroying my life over.

I have two preoders and open beta access, depending on how I like it in beta I'll either keep it or not.

TBH it looks pretty weaksauce from what I've seen thus far.

Gamespy has a huge write-up of it by their editors who went through it playing different characters. It looks like it could be a lot of fun, if you can stand the usual MMORPG grind. Which these days I can't anymore. Still, the atmosphere looks tops, from Gamespy's report.

I'll play it, solely on the basis of DAoC being awesome. If it sucks I'll be rid of MMO's forever! Win/win for me.

DAoC was teh sex imo...LOVED IT!

I'm a HUGE warhammer fan (board game...played in grand tournaments whole 9 yards) and can't wait for it

edited to add: RikaKazak actually comes from warhammer fantasy dwarfs ftw

All MMO's are fun at the start because they are new. You only have to look at how Conan miserably failed after being lauded as game of the year though.

The problem is everyone wants to be the new WoW but they are all releasing the games with little content. Conan got old very quickly, the massive class imbalance also didn't help.

I read the other day that Blizzard announced that 40% of all the people who left WoW to play Conan returned already. Oh boy.

Well there's no way Blizzard would know that.

But it's true that a MMORPG is the last place you want to have no content. People burn through what's there incredibly quickly, and many won't like certain areas or be locked off from them by their racial choices, etc. So you really need a very busy world or what you have will quickly look desolate and like a mere treadmill.

Had no idea Conan crashed.

A huge problem with MMORPG's is one they share with RTS's. The other players are at least half of, maybe most of, the game. If you have too few people playing, no matter how good the world/game is, it will die. Contrarily, if you have tons of people and your game sucks, most people won't care because they're in guilds and such, and that's the main attraction. Even if people leave, they come back. This happened with DAOC and the first EQ, and other games.

You need both a massive fan base AND a great game to snatch people away from the default MMORPG of the moment. It's hard enough to offer the second, and the first you don't really have all that much control of anyway besides making sure your servers are up to snuff.

QFT

Every MMO I've played, I have the fondest memories of the first ~month or two of release. I think it has something to do with how there is still a lot of unexplored content and no one really no what they are doing. Exploring the level 60 instances in WoW for the first time, when no one really knew how to do them, was so much fun. That's kind of what MMO's are all about imo.

This does not surprise me at all. Many of us who posted in the AoC thread discontinued our accounts within a month or so of registration. AoC and LOTRO are the only 2 MMOs I've played from the beginning - I got into WoW much later. LOTRO was pretty good but lacked content and AoC is a game that was nowhere near ready to be released - I feel as though I payed $50 to play a beta. Patches would come out on a regular basis but the game remained buggy and imbalanced.

This has me thinking that I may wait a while to pick up Warhammer regardless of how good the reviews are (AoC had great reviews). I'll let the people play for a while and follow a few forums to get a true idea of the quality of the game. If the word is great I'll purchase it sooner - otherwise I'll wait to see how Warhammer developers deal with the negatives.

Yeah being an early adopter is especially problematic with computer games.

And like I was saying, not even necessarily because of the game, but because you need to see how many people are playing it.

I can think of another reason why. All these games cost full price on release. After 3 months out they drop significantly.

Of course that's because everyone knows games are fun when everyone around you is a n00b and learning together.

Anyone else going to play open beta when it starts? I think you can download the client on the 15th if you pre ordered WAR, not sure when the actual servers go up though.

I just got a beta invite last night. Downloading the client now, 9gb and taking forever. Hopefully I can give it a run later this afternoon.

Or not. Servers are going to be up mid week "they hope".

Neat.

I know two people in the closed beta of Warhammer.

They both said there is absolutely zero chance that this game is ready for retail launch in a month.

Many skills dont work. There is no end-game content whatsoever right now. And class balance is essentially non-existent because none of the classes are even finished yet.

In other words... It's Conan II!

Level 1-25 Conan was tremendous. Too bad they didn't finish the game.

Probably a good reason why these companies put an NDA up until the game is release. Kinda sucks for consumers

i won't be touching any MMORPG that doesn't have an UO pre-trammel mindset (i.e. non-consensual PvP is allowed).
if i can't steal from other players, or get clubbed from behind while out and about in teh gaming world, it just ain't fun imo.
