Went to my sisters university to pick her up and literally 90% of people were in a pack and playing. I've never seen this many people my age walking around outside. Wondering how many pounds the earth will lose in the next month.

I have a Publix shopping center around the corner - walking distance from my house - with a Pokestop on one end and a gym on the other. The Publix is in the middle. I may see if sitting in the Publix cafe area (and their wifi) puts me in striking distance of both at the same time. Even when I get to Level 5, I think it will be a while before I try a gym battle, but it would be cool if Publix turned out to be the perfect spot, as I'm there multiple times a week.

EDIT: Living in a city/urban area seems like such an advantage in this game. I live in the suburbs and there are never any Pokemon around my house. I just used incense to get some. Got maybe 5-6 in 30 minutes?
Urban area definitely helps but there should be some sweet spots in the suburbs too. You need to find somewhere with more pokestops, otherwise you're going to start hurting for pokeballs pretty soon. That seems to be the limiting factor for me right now.

I leveled up from 7-11 today, lucky egg and like 12 pidgey evolves got me all the way through 9 and 10, also had an egg hatch and caught a few more new Pokémon with the egg active.

At what level do you start to need great balls?

High level rattatas and zubats are the worst. Usually use up several balls and the bastards still run away. Finally got smart and stopped wasting berries and great balls on them, probably going to stop pursuing them altogether.

Maximizing XP from a lucky egg
(cliffs: have 72 pokemon ready to evolve)

Unrelated theory about spawn locations: I think they are fixed, at least they are definitely not totally random. I live in a dense area with tons of stops and gyms where I can catch tons of pokemans by walking around, but I havent seen a single one at my place. otoh, there is nothing around where I work but I keep seeing pokemans appear right at my desk. It has been various common stuff so far. The shortest interval between two catches was about 20min.

I left my phone on last night on my desk and apparently I "walked" 1km while I slept.

Yay. Picked up a dratini today 15 secs from my house. Did we ever figure out approximately how many we can evolve in 30 mins?

see how many seconds it takes to evolve one, then take 1800 and divide it by that

Remember to adjust for lag, crash probability, and so on.

Melt the pokemons, leaving only what you can evolve so you aren't melting while lucky egg ticks.

I just wasted a bazillion balls on a Pidgeot with ??? CP. I missed him a whole bunch of times, but three times I did hit him, he got out of the ball.

EDIT: I'm disappointed. I'm in the aforementioned Publix and though it is directly in between a Pokestop and a gym in the same shopping center, it is too far away from both.

I'm level 14, but all I've done is catch Pokemon to level up and hatch a few eggs.

Can someone explain to me the purpose of these lucky eggs and how to use them?

lucky eggs double xp for 30 minutes

use one when you expect to gain a lot of xp in the next 30 minutes

Just caught a wild dragonite but he's really weak CP wise. Wonder what can be done given that you can evolve

Yeah I've completely stopped catching rattatas since I'm at the point where i have to think about conserving pokeballs. I'm pretty much only targeting pidgeys and weedles unless I find something that is rare. It's kind of strange that I'm more excited to find a pidgey than a pidgeotto since a pidgeotto is more likely to waste balls but that's how they set up the leveling.

so what does the icon in the bottom right corner mean? the one where you tap it and it shows what is nearby. if you open up that screen and tap on a pokemon it will change the icon and sometimes have little footsteps or something. As far as I can tell it doesn't actually DO anything though.

The footsteps tell you how far away you are. 1 footstep = you're really close, 3 footsteps = it's not so close. If you keep the menu open, it orders the pokemon from closest to you to farthest away.

I saw a Haunter nearby last night so I started walking toward the street but he started moving down the list, so I turned around and walked through my back yard until I tracked him down using the footsteps.

I believe those are what's closest. If it's greyed out, it's something that you've either never seen or never caught before - one of the two. If it has three footprints, it's furthest away, and one footprint is closest. Presumably you could try to track individual ones down by walking around and seeing if the footprints reduce or increase.
