If your team is outside, just get to somewhere out of LOS of most of the other team, like behind the small sniper house in the 'SW corner'. There are occasional infiltrators but a high percentage of the time you would be fine.
If you are in the nade warehouse map then you are going to have a problem in the vast majority of the spawn spots (if that map even has open sky, I can't remember I tried to avoid it). For the most part though, not very very hard.
The air drops are physical crates that are dropped. You have to hold a button and claim it, kind of like in headquarters. If you die before you get to claim it, its up for grabs. Both your teammates and enemies are eligible to claim it. (They are also able to claim it if they get there first, I had to knife one guy trying to steal last night) Its quite annoying watching your teammate get 10 kills with your helicopter. This doesn't disprove what you said, but it is more difficult than you thought. Right now I can't see any other reason to limit player size, other than to maintain fair leaderboards.
"the number of players we focused on when we were balancing map size, perks, classes, challenges, etc." - from the article, referring to 18.
I am neutral to this decision. I would like to think the people who made the game know what they are doing.
