Mono-black doesn't seem popular these days, but I've seen it a couple times. I'm playing around with Goblins at the moment.

Anybody play any block constructed decks they can recommend?
I usually only draft but I am thinking of shelling out some money for one of these decks so I can play something competitive.

ferrengi,

Decks of the week.

The strongest deck seems to be G/B planeswalker control, so it's a little expensive to build. If you want something cheap I think UGB self mill is probably the choice.

only played a few dailies w/ an RW deck (because i had most of the cards already), and it hasn't faired well

like *** said, the green-based mill (splinter/boneyard/etc) and the Garruk/Liliana control builds are def the best in the format atm

Thanks for the suggestions!
I do like UGB self mill in draft. Glad to see people having success with it in constructed. I think I'll give that one a shot.

Does anyone have a modern deck on MTGO? I'm just a couple points out from qualifying for the MOCS Season 1 Championship already and I don't play modern at all (nor do I really feel like investing a couple hundred into a deck for it atm). If someone happens to have a[n extra] deck that I could borrow during the MOCS Championship, I'd appreciate it

I have the manabase and a bunch of non-rares for UR Storm iirc (missing 4 Past in Flames and 3 Pyromancer X for the rares), you're welcome to borrow it if you want.

debating trying to play enchantress in the modern ptq in a few hours. how dumb is this?

basically missing like 8 cards from every real deck, only lists where I have everything are in the 5cc/esper/grixis wheelhouse.

So I haven't played this game in 16 years or whatever.. it sounds like everyone plays pre-built 'known' decks?

I find this odd..

I don't think so. Yes netdecks are popular, but check out the results from last weekend's GP Orlando. Two rogue decks met in the finals.

So I spend the last three months tuning and testing UB control to the point at which I am now confident with it against every deck in the format and then they go put Undying and Grafdigger's Cage in DKA. Awesome.

Wizards do not want you to play spells. Get used to creatures if you are playing Standard.

I don't get the reason for making Grafdigger's Cage. Was it needed in any format? Doesn't it just piss off a large portion of the decks out there? Am I overestimating how much play it will see?

Why would Grafdigger's Cage matter? It won't be played MD (or in many SBs, for that matter; what are you hoping to hose with it?) and it only makes your cards marginally worse.

Hey I play a Batterskull, Sphinx, and two Bloodline Keepers! (and spancasters ofc).

I think it's primarily to combat Undying in case it winds up being too powerful.

As far as UB control is concerned, Think Twice is one of the best cards in the deck, but it gets much worse if you cannot flash it back. The loss of flashback on Forbidden Alchemy is also significant. But the real offender is the loss of the use of Snapcaster Mage. That's really going to hurt.

I suspect Grafdigger's Cage will be in a lot of sideboards to combat Snapcaster Mage in Delver, though probably only as a 2 of since you don't want multiples. On the other hand, if Delver remains the most popular deck, I may not have to worry about it that much since they obviously aren't going to board it.

There are potential answers to this. My sideboard is pretty tight atm, but if it turns out to be a big problem I may have to start boarding Steel Sabatoge. Mental Misstep is also good in the format right now, especially against my tougher matchups (Haunted Humans, Delver, and RDW) so that is a possibility (I was running two MB for a while, mostly to combat Doomed Traveler and Stromkirk Noble, but have since removed it).

We'll just have to see how it winds up playing out. I hope you are correct in that it won't be too popular.

It's a fine tutor target if you're playing Trinket Mage, which is the first direction I'd go in if I wanted to play some sort of non-GY-based control deck. Some of the big control decks don't even play Snapcaster, so it's certainly possible to go in that direction.

I'm going to the SCG Open in Cinci after Dark Ascension release so I've been trying to brew a bit of post-DA standard. Here's a few random thoughts I have.

I think playing 1-2 Trinket Mage in the Mageblage decks could be sweet to fetch up a 1-of Cage and either Hex Parasite or Sylvok Replica (maybe Memnite). The Trinket Mage can grab another cheap guy if you have a piece of your equipment out to dodge removal spells. The Cage could slow down opposing control decks and doesn't really hurt me much besides the Snapcasters and it's always way better against them if I play it. Trinket Mage isn't terrible as a 2/2 and he trades with Geist on the ground while not being the most amazing Vapor Snag target.

I also think there could be a sweet new Birthing Pod deck with all these Undying creatures. I've been piecing together something that can stay really aggressive against the ramp deck, but against control decks going turn 2 birthing pod means every creature can be game over.

4 Birds
4 L. Elves
0-4 Avacyn Pilgrim
4 Strangleroot Geist
1-4 Viridian Emissary
1-4 Blade Splice
1 Viridian Corrupter
2-4 Solemn Simulacrum
1-4 Vorapede
1-2 Acidic Slime
1 Sun Titan
1 Primeval Titan/Wurmcoil Engine
1 Elesh Norn

3-4 Birthing Pod

I'm not sure if I should go a 3rd color or stick to GW. Huntsman could be a sweet reason to go GR because you can birthing pod into him to get his front triggers and still flip him immediately because you didn't cast anything. That opens up possibilities of Urabrask and Inferno Titan, but the mana is a bit ugly then.

Blue opens up 2 clone effects in Phantasmal Image and Metamorph which are extra sweet in Birthing Pod if you've ever played them. 1 Deceiver Exarch allows us to skip the 3 drop spot if we have enough mana. We can also use Ponder to decent use, but we are lacking shuffle effects. Maybe the Trinket Mage package could do some work here?

GB could also be fun to try because of the new Mikaeus that gives every creature Undying. Imagine birthing pod your creatures away only to get them back for the trigger and they are even bigger. You can even get a 2nd sac effect out of them if you really want to.

I'm probably missing some really obvious stuff right now because this was all off the top of my head.
