I hate the change mostly because it really favors US. There are no SC Opens etc. in EU and we since also have fewer GPs so it is almost impossible to make top X in competitive points or whatever. Previously you could atleast make top 16 in GP.

LSV weighs in

Quote:
At the end of each season, the following players will be invited to the Pro Tour:

Every winner of a Pro Tour Qualifier
Top 10 from North America
Top 10 from Europe
Top 5 from Japan
Top 5 from Asia Pacific
Top 5 from Latin America

Plus the Top 65 who aren’t already qualified based on the above criteria. There are a bunch of interesting things to examine here.
I guess that helps a little to prevent it from skewing all towards US players but there is the 65 slots that will still be skewed.

There is also nothing stopping EU TOs from putting together their own SCG open.

Also on the plus side, I think having all these top players at FNMs would be very beneficial for new players. Highly ranked players to be there to help them with strategy and tips and inspiration. A long time ago when I played more competitively it always sucked when the good players at my local store couldnt play any more because their ratings were too high. The more I read about it the more I think the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Although it seems like there is a very small slice of marginal pros that get royally screwed by this.

Yeah, the pros who don't want to devote their life to Magic get screwed. Like Luis said, Cheon gets screwed because he T8'd a GP and won't get an invite from that if he doesn't play at all otherwise. That sucks but the pros far outweigh the cons.

wow that point tilts me hardcore.
noone stopping SCG from running SCG opens in europe. noone stopping wotc from running 5ks in europe. noone stopping anyone from running big tournaments in europe.

does not mean that will happen tho! right now US pros have a huuuge advantage and the new rating system will make it even bigger.

edit: guess im pissed because i used to have an ptq in hamburg every season, that got cut. germany had 6 slots last season, from next season onward it will be 3. 50% cut niiiice. same thing in austria and switzerland FWIW.

Of course US players have an advantage. I'm not disputing that. But neither is it a conspiracy theory that SCG tournaments are only run here. There is sufficient demand for them.

The SCG's are now simply a nice event to drive to but 0 reason to fly to.

those fees were critical to making it reasonably cost effective to travel to a ton of them

i think that was the reason they discontinued them

Based on lack of 1 of's seems very unlikely that it was a data entry error.

There was lots of grumblings from day one about him but I really know nothing about him.

cliffs on the new rating:

1) Ppl who dont play alot cannot qualify for ANYTHING.

2)Ppl who dont play alot cannot qualify for a PT via GP.

3) Ppl who dont play alot cannot get byes for GPs.

4) In the old system u knew pretty much exactly what rating u need to qualify for PTs / get byes for GPs. In the new system thats very unclear and might flactuate alot.

5) That whole lifetime-thingy is TOTALLY irrelevant to ur skill as a mtg-player.

6) The old system had some weaknesses but it reflected ur skill pretty well imo. the new system will not do that.

i dont like it at all. I guess grinders will like it.

I wish they kept the rating just so you could compare your real skill level to others

Hey has anyone tried the 4booster sealeds? I really like the idea... you basically open 4 boosters then build a 30 card deck.

the stuff about how his fairies deck was foil/nonfoil in spots that would seem advantageous isn't helping what I think about it

Hey guys, i just started playing mtgo again, and I am really noob, can someone help me build my draft deck? I started the draft mono black after opening pharoah and following it with a passed assassin and then doomblade.. then in p3p1 with my deck looking very solid, i opened mindcontrol and followed that up with azure mage. But then during deck construction i didnt know how to splash it, like should i go 10-7? How would you build this deck, and if you built it mono black how would you build it? Thanks

I would 100% play the mind control over the taste of blood. I don't think it's ever correct to play taste of blood even in a blood-thirst heavy deck.

If you want to add the mage as well, I'd take out a blood seeker? Or a bloodrage vampire? I'd also probably play the devouring swarm over one of those too. Not much to sacrifice, but it could be nice with the pharaoh.

I think I'm greedier then most when it comes to splashing, but I wouldn't add more then 4 or 5 islands for the 2 blue cards.

I was thinking 6 islands, but going monoblack isn't the worst option here. distress is also way better than taste

i probably keep it mono black and cut taste of blood and a blood seeker for mind rot and devouring swarm. mind control is one of th best cards but he has the shade and spirit. consistency goes a long way as well. you can board distress in for mythics.

its not just Mind Control its Azure Mage which is a 1st pick caliber card, consume and shade are fine at 10-11 swamps
