To be fair the new set looks like it still fits in the Magic universe but I do prefer when WOTC designs new worlds and doesnt just nick them from previously created worlds, which they have done from time to time, ie Arabian Nights.
Ya this makes no sense at all, WOTC is a profit driven company and if they rotate to the next theme that has the most draw, that is 100% fine by me and it isn't like somehow the product is denigrated in my eyes once I found out the theme was driven partially by popularity.

Yea srsly who cares about the background theme ? If the set is well balanced and fun to play (and they've always been good at it so far) they could make cards with actual characters from True Blood or Twilight for all I care.

OTOH, those double faced cards seem awkward for IRL drafting.

So PTR died, I guess. But all I hear about it is on Facebook. Does anyone have a news story or more details?

Took me too long to realize you weren't talking about Poker Table Ratings.

This is kind of vague, but I don't have very many format staples for either legacy or modern. If I've been given some, but not a lot of money to put together a deck to play in some smaller local events in that format and would probably stick with that deck for the foreseeable future, what format would you guys recommend? Legacy or modern?

Hopefully they learned from jace, but a lot of them really seem to hose aggro decks that don't just play a bunch of dudes and smash for 20 on turn 4.

Also, I'm not a fan of how involved the mechanics have gotten. Used to be they were simple, unique, and effective.

Now they can't even create mechanics without removing the card back or doing something else completely wacky.

i hate how the rules for drafting are kind of obscure and are just basically equivalent to "just wing it guys." instead this should be the rules for draft: everyone opens the pack and fans out the pack face down. if you see a double sided card then you reveal it and announce the name of the card. you put the double sided card in the center of the table, then you then mark it on the checklist card and use the checklist card. at the end of the draft you go get the proxy back from the tournament organizer.

for drafts at Professional REL, the judge should examine the pack and replace it with a checklist proxy with a clear mark for the correct card, since everyone at PT level is expected to know what all the checklist cards do.

right now the rules reward looking at your opponents hands (the backsides of the cards) and also reward trying to surreptitiously put doublesided cards in your pack without anyone noticing. sleight of hand shouldnt be a requirement of playing MTG. does it not bother anyone that you can gain an advantage if you have large hands to conceal what doublesided card you drafted versus small hands that cant? I think the fact that they allow dexterity in drafting to be part of the game to be ridiculous.

Actually since letting other players know what colors you're drafting is good for you (bc you always want to cooperate with your neighbors rather than draft the same colors), I don't see concealing the cards being an issue. However it's still awkward as hell to have an open information in booster draft (especially one you have to actively look around to register), thus knowing at least a color of almost every player at the table (since there's one double faced card per pack). I don't think they'll replace the card with a checklist beforehand either, since even at PT level you can't expect everyone to know all the cards, even more so nowadays with the PTs being held almost always within a few weeks time of a set release. I have no doubt they'll find a way to make it work, but right now it seems quite sketchy.

Szigeti has had numerous DQs and suspensions, perhaps the most famous coming in 2003 when he top-decked a Searing Flesh, wiped it on his backside, and then slammed it down on the table. He was given a match loss for Unsportsmanlike Conduct at the time.

PTR was a bad influence on several people who are my friends, gave constant crap to other people I knew and essentially every minute of anywhere he was had to be about him. The only thing the stories get wrong is that the ratio of mean/fun was much greater mean than fun as painted in these retrospectives.

I can't exactly morn the guy.

I was talking to a friend of mine about a feature match he was in with PTR where the coverage said that a draw was declined because they thought one of them had an outside chance of top 8. The exact way it had played out was that my friend said to PTR "I would rather lose $1000 then help you make $1"
