I think it's worth it, especially with a discount. Maybe you could wait for -50% but it's cheap to begin with so 50 vs 33% doesn't make that much difference. It makes the game slightly easier though, since you're getting extra currency. It's just more fun things to do and the new expeditions are well done. The last one is especially insane and much harder than Shangri'la on a first glance.

Vive has better tracking, requires less usb 3 ports, fits better on glasses users, etc etc.

my tldr is - if you want seated cockpit sim, then maybe the rift... if you want roomscale get the vive.
meh, not worth arguing about. you may have a personal preference otherwise but i'm confident the consensus is pretty much as i stated. we mostly agree anyway.

Even most of the hardcore Vive fanboys usually agree the Rifts controllers are way better atm - Vive feels like handling a controller object while Rift basically gives you your hands in VR. They've done a really good job of making handling stuff intuitive with them.

My main complaint about my Rift is that the screens get so hot after about 45 minutes that it gets warm, sweaty and quite uncomfortable - even worse if I'm standing or moving about. I pretty much have to put a fan in front of my face for any extended play.

I'm a big fan of VR, I think it has the potential to be really amazing in a countless amount of areas outside of gaming. With that said I just can't recommend anyone invest in it right now unless they're an enthusiast with a decent amount of spare change to drop.

VR at the moment has some major problems holding it back from becoming accessible and mainstream that I hope/have faith it will solve. Price is the obvious one, ease of use being another. For everyone in this thread, VR isn't a problem to set up but for casual gamer/computer user it can be really overwhelming, especially if they're buying all the hardware from scratch. General discomfort and cables limit the experience. PSVR is clearly the most user friendly but that comes at the cost of it being the weakest experience while not really being much cheaper when you take the price of VR software on PS4 generally being higher compared to software on PC. It's also sold out in most regions. I don't think there's a "right" option out of the three right now since they all have pros and cons different to each other. It's a pricey mistake if you think you made the wrong choice.

VR among devs seems to be in a weird space as well. Hardly anyone is making money. There was a meme on twitter that blew up that Palmer Luckey is the only one to make a profit in VR atm. I doubt that's true but it's probably not far off. On one hand there's a lot of people going all in with GDC even holding a separate VRDC. On the other hand, a lot of those early adopters aren't making any money and it's putting a lot of people off making a completely VR focused game instead of just supporting VR on top of a traditional experience or just not supporting VR at all. That leads to another problem, there's no killer app and the software currently available is average to ****. A lot of tech demo and gimmicky stuff and no real "must have" complete VR exclusives. That's not going to change any time soon unless people start making money on VR.

I think VR tech will no doubt continue to evolve because of it's potential in areas outside of gaming but I don't know if it will ever be any more than a niche market for games.

So uh what's the difference between vr and ar?

Pokemon Go is basically simplistic AR. Point a lens at something and it projects something onto your environment through the screen.

AR is augmented reality.

Think google glass with a projected hud showing you infographics about where stuff is around you in a city, or pokemon go.

When you can do AR in normal glasses or contact lenses without some bulky crap attached then I can see it being useful ( hook it up to car speedo, satnav, etc ), but AR gaming seems terribads to me as a home gaming method. Pokemon go had a lot of potential but they pissed it away by being **** devs.

I actually like AR and even motion control in mobile games. I'm in the minority.

+1. AR could be cool but like VR, implementation just isn't there yet. I'm looking forward to hololens and magic leap though.

Controllers might be alright, but the tracking issues make it a big negative.

Hmmm seems to me like the potential for AR >>>>>>>>> VR. VR will be a small niche, maybe even the more popular of the two for awhile but it'll quickly go to AR as the technology gets there.

Maybe I watched too much Black Mirror.

I think your mad.

Do you want to be inside a world or look at a diorama of it?

There's some niche AR stuff like warhammer/dnd or outside stuff like pokemon go, but for games VR is just where it's always going to be.

One thing that baffles me is that current VR headsets don't have a camera on the front to enable a passthrough mode. It would enhance usability if you could just hit a button and be able to see the real world rather than having to disentangle yourself from the headset. I can't imagine it would increase cost or weight much at all.

Sorry.

I bought Tales and am kicking myself. Game is gorgeous but was clearly made for 13 year old Japanese boys with all the fan service and pretty boring/linear dungeons. I'm hoping it gets better but never paying full price for anything again.

Also was looking at FF14. Today it's "on sale" with the expansion but the sale is cheaper if I buy them separately??? Maybe I'm missing something.

Same, AR is a pretty neat concept. The recently released Portal AR tech demo was incredibly cool.

The immersion you feel playing Minecraft VR using a Rift is stunning. Even simple things like looking down a cliff edge or entering a cave complex.

It comes across as amazingly real.

yes. honestly i can't imagine you playing this game for more than another 20 minutes but each to their own

yes they can be compared, they are 90% similar. oculus has much nicer controllers (for now), a more comfortable headset and slightly better visuals. vive has much better tracking, an easier setup and is much better for out of the box walking around. those things can be done on the rift but you'd be screwing around with extensions. vive will be a better choice for you. also, if you have glasses, vive is much better.

yes, it's a graphics card. people who are enthusiasts who want top of the range PCs usually design and build them themselves. it's cheaper and you get exactly what you want.

with that said, there will be some US sites, i don't know them (i'm not in the US). you could look at alienware desktops but they'll be overpriced.

to be clear, you don't need a top of the range pc to use VR. but if money is no issue, there's no harm in getting one to future proof yourself and to be able to play everything at ultra settings.

they will never sell bundles at best buy w/ absolute top of the range PCs because the demand is so tiny for a setup that strong.

my advice would be to find a tech savvy friend to help you navigate all of this.
Solid Info. Thanks.
