DQ8, the various Xeno____ games, as well, and if you allow more action-oriented stuff Secret of Mana and Dark Cloud 2.

But it does seem like the genre has been pretty stagnant/dying. Only 2 of the games you listed came out this decade. I think a big part of it is that the Japanese game market really focuses more on handheld(because of increased use of public transportation for long commutes? idk) and so a lot of the second tier intellectual properties(not Final Fantasy, basically) keep on coming out for Vita and PSP and the DS and **** and so are technically way, way behind even smaller budget indie games for the consoles/PC.

FF6, Crono Trigger and Lunar are my favorites by far. Way ahead of their time.

Went ahead and finished Setsuna despite not enjoying it much. Game is about 60% complete, story is FF10 rehashed and the combat is awful. I ended up just running through the last few dungeons and beating the last boss 10 levels before where I shouldbe because I have to beat all rpgs that I start. Would not recommend buying this game.

IMO the problem with jrpgs is that they haven't improved at all. Graphics are way better now, but they all use retro graphics. (probably due to how profitable they are, but still) The combat systems hardly change. The overall stories hardly change. You're literally playing the same game you played 20 years ago.

Yes. The story is trash but the combat system is legitimately fun and the leveling system is the best in any FF game.

Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vespiria are some recentish (lol 2007-08) excellent jrpgs.

Ni No Kuni is a slighty (2011) newer one

Lost Odyssey was really good, and I was expecting it to become a series but doesn't seem to be since the team announced they are doing smaller projects now. (I think)

Tales of Vesperia was ok, honestly didn't get all the hype. I've heard Ni No Kuni is good, but haven't played it.

My friend swears by FF14 since it got rebooted. Says the storyline is amazing and the boss fights are the best he's ever seen. Unfortunately there's tons of filler and who has time for an MMO these days?

edit: forgot to ask: Planning to get banner saga, is it worth it to buy the first or should I just jump straight into the second?

I'm currently playing the first one, 3-4 hours in, plan to finish it in coming weeks.

Strategy game, not an RPG. But it is very good.

If games like FF Tactics are in the conversation then VC overlaps enough to count imo.

I have a feeling that if there was a discussion on strategy games and VC was mentioned a likely comment would be something like: "JRPG game, not strategy. But it is very good."

There's no world exploration in VC. That's quite fundamental to an RPG.

Oh I'm thought you meant valkyria is comparable to banner saga, which it seems to be. Really enjoyed valkyria and enjoying banner saga as well. Wouldn't count either as rpgs.
