Not sure if you were looking for a real answer or not, so I'm going to leave this short answer that I didn't have to waste much time thinking about
thx was actually looking for a real answer so I just watched a review video and the guy described the game as a money making game.
there is no main goal except amass money it seems.
7min in he mentions quests that seems just optionals and dont make advance any story.

stopped watching after 8 min and in 8mins of review.

ps:that was the 1st video that poped up when I typed in stardew valley review

Darkest Dungeon confirmed more addictive than heroin.

I agree so much with you. It doesn't look good and is just lazy.

The first weeks are fun, but when you reach week 20 or so it becomes a grind.

Not at all, just that particular style doesn't really appeal for some reason. I don't know if that is even the reason it doesn't appeal to me. I just know when I look at it it doesn't click. (The graphics are probably part of it though; that's a pretty common aesthetic which I likely have associations for.)

I digged don't starve but I dont feel remotely attracted to stardew.
not sure if its the graphical thing.
tbh don't starve was very tedious after a while so I guess Im not into these games much.
I don't think it looks at all like don't starve. I think it looks like a ton of early JRPGs and RPG maker games and small titles from as far back as the 90's. Don't starve (which I tried but didn't really get hooked on) has a pretty unique aesthetic going on.)

Animating good pixel art is a lot of work and not lazy at all.

Stardew Valley doesn't have the greatest art or animation but it was made by one dude. I think it's incredibly impressive and far from lazy.

I agree that sticking to 16 bit era guidelines with their art is pretty played out but pixel art as a whole continues to evolve and pump out some awesome looking games. Hyper Light Drifter and Deaths Gambit are 2 examples of "modern pixel art".

Well, it looks lazy even if it isn't.

I personally think SDV (is this an approved abbreviation?) looks pretty good; wish it was more "sprite" than pixelated but the screenshots remind me of a Link to the Past and similar games, which stylistically hold up well compared to polygons and ****. It looks a lot like the original Harvest Moon tbh, although I guess that game has "better" graphics.

Maybe time to pull the trigger.

if I have family and very limited time I don't think I should try to progress in Dark Souls right? I found myself just replaying same area for an hour like a moron and I'm like level 9 and it's super early... I know one hour is nothing, but most of that is getting to the boss, I don't mind practicing ******ed bosses but when getting to it is also the hard part it's a bit tedious

Valid point on the use of the term "core" gamer, since at this point the numbers of "casual" gamers is quickly becoming a majority.

The article outside of that is pure hyperbole. Although I should say, it's not the article, but the speaker at GDC making these comments.

Quote:
if they own more than 10 games on the PC software portal Steam. Smiling, Danc told them “you don’t matter.”
...
“You are novelty seekers,” Danc told the crowd at GDC. “You are the smallest demographic in gaming.”
Uhh? We are? Might want to check your facts on that one.

in case anyone has this issue--for games that don't show the menu on the load screen and you have an AMD card, you have to turn off anti aliasing in the amd settings (recent updates automatically put it in), I ended up dropping the nuke--each card and general settings and now war of mine/sonic racing transformed show the menu.

Didn't realize till today (it's an entirely new interface) to realize it had different settings for each video card and I was turning off the settings on the wrong one. *facepalm* (they're the same card obv)

Casual $ is always where the biggest $ is in everything.

got CSGO working but that ended up requiring going through 4 different errors (each fix created a new error obviously) and it's still a pain since I have to literally go to the folder to load it but hey it works now (had to set both steam/csgo run as admin, then you have to load both in their folders, don't get why the shortcuts don't work but whatever, took over an hour but I wanted to shoot something so worth it. (some update they did caused this and they won't fix it but that was very annoying)

in actual interesting news, steam is beta testing discounting (only a few are up atm) the games you have on the bundles so if you own everything but borderlands the pre sequel in that giant borderlands bundle, it's only $4.80 (buy the borderlands triple pack) instead of $15. So it's worth checking the bundles now.

Picked up Factorio the other day and am really enjoying it. The learning curve is pretty steep. On my 4th play through already and every time I get a few stages deeper into automating everything b4 I realize the next step will be a logistical nightmare unless I scrap my entire factory and start from scratch. I turned on the option so that the aliens never attack me 1st. It's tough enough figuring out what to do w/o worrying about damn bugs attacking me.

Only major complaints are the UI is a bit clunky and sometimes counter intuitive, and the starting map spawning is a bit broken. You need 4 major items to progress in the early game and it is not uncommon for 1 of them to be completely missing from the map or be located so far away from the other 3 that it is not feasible to create a factory from the ground up if iron is only in the SE corner of the map and none of the other elements are anywhere close. Had to restart 2 or 3 times before I got a reasonably playable map

I'm on my 25th restart and I'm almost ready for blue science. They give you an infinite map and somehow it's not enough space. Let me know if you want to do a multiplayer game, seems like it'd be a lot more enjoyable that way.

My last play through stalled when even though i had finally automated sweet green science, my iron and copper supply lines were too close together and I didn't feel like rearranging everything (also didn't realize there WAS such a thing as blue science lol.)
