Snatched Faster Than Light as well as BTP.R2:FLoRA. Also really struggling with decision about Black Ops II but I'm really not sure if I can manage work, wife, poker and another addicting game, probably would be better off to go back to WoW as casual.

Spoiler:
BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, DOH

Picked up FTL and surgeon simulator.

Gonna pick up walking dead as soon as I decide to walk to the other room and get my wallet.

Holding out hope that don't starve will go down in price a bit, but might just wait until winter. I have plenty of stuff to do before then anyway.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to loading up your Steam Wallet vs. other payment methods?

Slightly faster I guess? No chance of it being denied. Otherwise the same

To reiterate goofyballer, Psychonauts for 2.50. Great game from the makers of Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion.

Graphics are somewhat old, but it holds up well, and it's a damn fun platformer.

I'm doing the same with Don't Starve. Would like to play it now, but going to wait as long as it takes to get it at a better price (even though $9 seems good).

If you're into the old 3-D dungeon crawls like Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master, etc. then it is fantastic. It basically takes those old games and just says "hey, let's make one of these" and does a great job. You aren't going to find much new/innovative stuff, but the puzzles are interesting and there are some definite stumpers, and there are plenty of secrets to find and monsters to kill.

If you look back on those 3D dungeon crawls and say "man, I wish I had more of this," Legends of Grimrock is basically a must buy. If they aren't really your thing, stay away. If you've never tried one, it's a great example of the genre. You can't really go wrong for the price.

Honestly, I don't know what that genre even means. I'm really looking for more RPGish stuff though.

Although I don't even know what RPG means anymore. What I enjoy is character progression.

It's €2.74 (and probably even cheaper if you're a $-kinda person) so why not just buy it and try it?

The description starvingwriter82 gave is pretty much the best you're going to get. If you like that type of games, it's awesome. If you don't... it's not.

It's not really an rpg in the current definition of the genre though.

This should probably give you a fairly good idea what you're in for.

Amazon had a pretty ridiculous sale a month or so ago where Civ4 + DLC / Civ5 Gold Edition / Xcom Enemy Unknown were a combined $20. I tried to get into Civ4 after hearing people say it was better than 5 but it looked pretty dated when I fired it up and for other reasons too I just couldn't really get into it. I've since tried Civ5 and I'm pretty much hooked atm. I like the strategic chess like elements of combat in Civ5 as opposed to Civ4's stack of doom warfare and overall the game just feels very deep with all of the different ways to win and succeed. The graphics aren't amazing but they're pretty damn solid. I'm not sure exactly what makes Civ4 so much better than 5 according to some people but my limited experience suggests the opposite. Might have been a different story if I had gotten into Civ4 at the time it released though, who knows. I can definitely understand when a successful series makes a few big changes that it can be a turn off for veteran players. As a newbie to the series though I'd def recommend Civ5. So ****ing addicting.

Picked up FTL and Legend of Grimrock for less than $7 combined. Also probably gonna keep an eye out for Rogue Legacy.

The civ 5 AI was/is pretty terrible iirc which is part of what made the game seem so bad from someone coming from civ 4.

I'd say go ahead and get it. If there's any dungeon crawler you're going to like, it'll be Legend of Grimrock. It's a great example of the genre.

You get "character progression" in the sense that you start with four generic party members (fighter, mage, thief, whatever) and the more they fight and solve puzzles, the more they gain levels, get new abilities, and become stronger. There's no real character progression or anything in terms of the people in the game having personalities of any sort.

If I had to describe the genre to someone who just had no idea whatsoever, I would tell them to imagine Diablo, only with fewer monsters, more puzzles, and all played in a maze, from the perspective of a first person shooter.

The AI in every civ game is reasonably fail-tastic, it's the only thing that makes the higher difficulties beatable. In a human vs. human matchup, a 12 year old with a "diety" difficulty advantage would head stomp a pro with no advantage every time.

It's kind of a failing of nearly all video games imo (that turning up the difficulty doesn't make the AI any smarter, it just gives them bigger guns/stronger attacks/higher chance to catch interceptions/whatever). But, I guess changing a few numbers in your lines of code is a hell of a lot easier than actually programming solid AI.

When you look at how much time/energy/money has gone into getting computers to the point where they can even beat a human at chess, it shouldn't be a huge mystery why a single dev team working on one video game project for a few years (esp one as open ended as Civilization) doesn't have the easiest time writing AI that plays the game as well as humans.

then the solution is obviously to take houdini and just plug it into the civ interface

On the other hand - you might say that once we've gotten to the point where a computer can even beat the best human players at chess, getting decent ai for games targeted at 'regular humans' shouldn't be that far off.

True, I didn't think of it that way. I'm not sure if the work done on solving chess can be transformed into more general-case solutions for things like PC strategy games, or if it's all pretty specific to chess and not easily portable to other cases.
