So I finished this game in every possible fashion: Vanilla JA2, 1.13 + New Inventory and 1.13 + New Inventory + Wildfire and I think with 1.13 it's one of the greatest games ever in the genre ( if not the best ). 1.13 adds so much depth to it that it becomes an entirely new game.

So my question is, are there any other games like it? I would prefer "installable games" but online, browser based etc is good too. Possibly not too old as I would hate to play something in 640x480 if it's not browser based.

All suggestion are welcome

I pretty much tried every possible military RTS in the last decade and now I want to try some turn-based games; doesn't have to be strictly realistic, but I would prefer it.

JA2 was so incredibly awesome.

when i looked for JA2 on steam i sawthat they have a JA2/ Disciplines II Gold Combo.

Disciplines II has a 80 metacritic rating and is discribed as follows:

About the Game

Disciples II Gold is a turn-based fantasy game comprised of the awarding winning Disciples II Dark Prophecy and its critically acclaimed expansions sets. Control over 200 unique characters across 5 massive campaigns. Whether you are a beginner or an expert Disciples II Gold offers hundreds of game play hours for all levels.

never played it but maybe this is what youre looking for.

im so going to play JA2 now. thanks for bringing back good memories op.

edit: also seems to be the same developer as JA2

We could even try the new multiplayer mode.

I think they have co-op for the campaign and TDM with X mercs on a single map.

Disciples II is like Heroes of Might and Magic (HOMM). Really great game, but not very much like JA at all.

For something like JA, the closest thing that comes to mind is X-COM: UFO Defense. The entire series (though some are forgettable) is on sale for ten bucks at Impulse this weekend. The first X-COM is generally ranked among the top five games of all time, often at the very top. And this even though it came out in, like 1994 or something.

Great fun, and it's one off the few games I've played that are actually scary. There were times when an alien attacked that I jumped in my seat, and when a particular one starts doing his nasty business at breakneck speed -- anyone who has played the game knows exactly which one I mean -- the sinking dread is unforgettable. I recommend it very highly.

Here is an installation guide:

First you need JA, either the gold version or the normal version, patched up to the lastest patch.

Then you go here: Download 1.13. Download the FULL 1-click installer
This will make the game higher resolution, give the new inventory, new weapons, graphics and so many incredible tweaks you can't even imagine. This alone is worth like a full new game.

Then you go here: Download MP 1.5 and download the MP package. If you are a PC noob, don't use SVN and just download the 1-click installer. Latest version should be MP1.5

( Optional ) After all this, I created a new installation and also installed the Wildfire mod.
Install JA2 -> Install 1.13 -> download Wildfire ( use the HAM1.6 + Wildifre download ).

Now you have two completly different and awesome games and a mulitplayer Co-op, DM and TDM.

The source code for JA2 has been release, so everything is now community made. But thanks to the source code, they are really doing some amazing things.

It's not made by the developers themselves, but it's way higher quality than the original game.

As for the steam version, I'll let you know ASAP.

EDIT: Apparently the Steam version is slightly bugged ( not the 1.13, but the vanilla version you get on steam; bugs are due to the port to steam ), so if you have other means to get the game, it may be slightly better and faster.

If you get it on steam, here is a walkthrough on how to get it working. Link

It may be an annoyance, but it is really worth it to get 1.13. I can't play without it now, as vanilla gets incredibly shallow

EDIT2:
Apparently they fixed the issues, and you can do a direct install: " Rather than try to install the 1.13 patch to SteamApps\[YourName]\Jagged Alliance 2, I installed it to steamapps\common\Jagged Alliance 2 (fresh install/download). Near as I can tell this works perfectly (I haven't played very far into the game though so I can't be sure) "

yeah silent storm was a blast imo, very similar. however, search for patches because character development was broken. i think someone made a mod which really brought things in line.

Agreed. GOG is too good a concept not to support, and their stuff is optimized for modern operating system and needs no further patching or tinkering with DOSBox, etc.

I got JA2 from them and installed it on my 64-bit Vista machine, and it works fine. Install was just clicking one button.

They've had JA2 for quite a while, btw. They've also got the original.

yeah gonna have to get in on this.

my first lan party ever was unsuccessfully trying to get the computers networked using a bnc hub for about 6 hours. By the time we finally got 4-5 computers up and running we had lost everyone else to playing JA2 over a null modem cable
