Liberty City as designed is not a fun place. Liberty City is where Heavy Rain would take place - it really is not where a GTA game should take place without drastic changes to the design or the gameplay. In my opinion BoGT ultimately cannot reach the "fun" craziness that it strives for because Liberty City as designed cannot handle that. They tried to go serious before BoGT, but that doesn't jive with the gameplay and feels really false and silly. You can't try to make a serious real-world narrative involving "brothers" in a biker gang and then have them go kill scores of people every 10 minutes - ludonarrative dissonance.
The length of the expansions is awkward. A "mere" 10-15 hour game feels wrong in that world, at least with the stories they tried to tell (L&D much more so than BoGT). Rockstar said that the expansions were experimental. If they want to introduce entirely new protagonists and take them through a grand arc (as they generally do), the games probably need to be longer. One $30 expansion that's a 30-40 hour ride with a new character seems more appropriate than 2 weak 10 hour stories. Or, an expansion with the protagonist we already played in the main game could work - maybe pick them up a year down the line or whatever. A $10, 5 hour main character expansion plus the other thing I mentioned might make a lot of sense.
Anyway,
SA > VC > LCS > 3 > VCS > BoGT > 4 > L&D
No GTA 2? That game was siiiiiiick, and so much replay value, I can easily play it today anytime. There's no other GTA game that you can just fire up and **** around so easily.
Although GTA 1 sucked. ****** graphics, didn't really make much sense of what was going on, so I say GTA 2 is the first real game of the series.
I think 3 will always be my favorite just because it was so innovative. The importance of 3 is so undervalued.
3 > 2 > 4 > SA > VC
out of the ones I played. And I don't even see how you could put 4 behind VC, as VC was basically just an expansion for 3. It had it's moments, but nothing new really came out of it.
In fact, gonna download 2 and play it.

I think GTA IV is incredible, always have and always will. I have played every GTA game from the days of overhead view, and the city they have created in it feels alive like no other that they have done.
I struggle to see why people don't like it. It has its flaws, no doubt, but overall its such a well-rounded and satirical game, gets into my top 10 games easily.
I mean, I could easily rate 4 as the best game just because it's the newest, but that's like rating a remake of a movie as the better version just because it's newer. You've played the classic GTAs, you should be able to see why they have a special place in the heart of GTA fans.
